i didnt untill i read an article saying it is, so i googled it and it is, when i was growing up everyone used it for short people, but we were all wrong and didnt know it, from google:

The M word (Midget) is a demeaning slur for a person who has dwarfism. Dwarfism is the result of a medical condition. The M word originates from the oppression and exploitation of people with dwarfism in freak shows of the mid 1800s. There are many who dont know our history and thats a shame. While often peoples usage, comments and intent may be honest and heart felt, they do not respect the prejudice a person with dwarfism faces nor the lack of acceptance, respect or understanding.

Little people is fine with me, or whatever term someone prefers.

I personally don't say it anymore. "Dwarfs" and "Little People" sound a bit weird too, though I still use the latter.

Don't think this is a new thing. People have pretended to be offended by that word for years.

Yeah they are supposed to be referred to as little people, otherwise it is an offensive term. "The Little Women of Atlanta" came through my job once and they filmed, and the director and producer told us beforehand that the term was considered offensive, and "little people" is more appropriate. I didn't feel the need to call them either, I just spoke to them by their names.

I did know that and haven't said it since maybe high school but personally I've always wondered why "dwarf" was considered better. Like, there are whole fictional species, with unfavorable traits and features, with the same name. Knowing "dwarf" was from a time when people with dwarfism were considered Other, it just seems like it's open for more of the same critique.

It's not like that. If the word fits, it's to be used. If you're overweight, you're fat. If you're small, you're a midget. If you have a mental deficiency, you're a R. The words were made to describe them. They're not derogatory, like slurs. I don't ever use the slur for a homosexual. Hell, I don't even say homosexual. I say LGBT. Midget and R are legitimate words, no matter what this dying site says.

I can only back this if you are referring to a material that is fire resistant, but uses the R word in it's place. Imagine if you had a kid with your obviously fat wife and he/she had downs syndrome and people loosely used this word around you after raising him/her for years and years. Come on man, we are out of middle school by now aren't we?

You can type gyp and gypsy too but they're pretty vile slurs, and while calling someone a midget isn't as bad as some examples, it's still offensive.
