Plot synopsis below. Which sounds better?

Years ago I dreamed of being a writer but gave up when I had no talent. Lately I have been thinking of cool ideas and wishing I could gain some skill. I'm now considering taking a class or something maybe....but anyway I recently came up with 2 ideas if I ever learn to write a novel

Idea 1: In the future humans finally gain ability to travel to other solar systems. We discover a planet where technology doesn't work. But as soon as you enter the planets atmosphere, magic does. And you don't have to be a native of that world to use it.

Anyone can harness the energies if you know what to do. The local society resembles somewhat Europe on earth in the medieval period. The humans act peaceful at first and in fact some are..... but the people in charge of the mission have other plans

They end up peacefully learning how to use magic and then once they have mastered it they turn on the locals and start a war. Soon thousands of warships from earth arrive to offload more soldiers to the planet. New arrivals always have to wait til they arrive to start learning magic as it's hard to teach it outside the atmosphere. But soldiers continually are arriving in a well oiled machine of war

The natives put up a good fight though because rhey have known magic for untold generations and all adults are skilled in its use. Some humans and some natives seek to end the war peacefully but that may prove impossible....

Idea 2: the Norse gods are real. Always have been. When humans stopped worshipping them they just decided to go mind their own business in other realms. But now the time of Ragnarok has come. The End of Days for gods and men. Soon gods, giants, elves, dwarves, and other creatures are locked in a massive planet wide battle that erupts in every nation on earth

Mortals can only flee the battles and try to stay out of the way. Story would follow several groups of people in various places in the world and chapters would jump around between these groups as we see them fighting to keep from being killed in the chaos.

Put most simply, kinda imagine if the Christian apocalypse series Left Behind was about the Norse apocalypse instead

The Ragnarok one would be inspired by the myths not marvel. And it would be really brutal. Not full of comedy. Thor might not even be considered a hero to the mortals maybe depending on how I decided to write him. He'd be focused on defending Asgard and his family, not the mortals of earth . If this was a movie it would be rated R. It's basically a horror story kinda

Didn't stop Dan Brown.

Idea 1 sounded more interesting up until the invasion shit, which feels meh. Honestly, have them go after an unobtanium expy and it would just feel like an Avatar clone at that point. Other than that, it feels like a movie you're framing as a book. Not to mention that you go into this all this stuff about a conflict for magic-world but you don't really say much about the magic itself, which is the interesting part of anything involving magic =p

Either way, the handling of the idea is what's going to make the difference.

Rather than just going ahead and spending money on a course, you might want to check out the *free* classes on YT and other writing guides to see if it's something you actually want to do.

But what's up with this board lately and writing? >_> Up until just a few months ago, the only person I heard talking about wanting to write was Entity who iirc eventually self-published.

The first one sort of sounds like Jack Chalker's Warden Diamond series.

Christopher Paolini proved that if your parents are rich, willing to self-publish the fanfiction you wrote as a teenager, and you're willing to travel a lot and do lots of book tours to push your novel, you can become a success through sheer force of will rather than via talent.

Also remember, if you just copy one thing, it doesn't work. You have to copy at least two things, then mash them together.

In spite of my Nordic heritage and largely Vanatru faith, I've seen enough of Ragnarok as of Gaiman's retelling of the Christianized Nordic mythology. I might take a peak or three at the former concept, however, depending on how it turns out.

Add some poorly written sex scenes if your characters are adults, or some half-back-asswards "logic" for melodrama between characters of any age, and it'll be a best seller.

No wonder my first book on Amazon barely sold at all. *Rolls her eyes*

And honestly, that avenue is probably closed now anyway. A lot of people have tried to go the schools route since then so the novelty is lost.

I'm still surprised he could copy scenes almost word for word and not get into any trouble.

You typically want to mash together things within the same genre, or at least things that aren't wildly different. The concept could work, but it would really have to lean more in one direction or the other.

That said, I think the paranormal romance fad might be wearing down since we're seeing fewer and less outlandish titles make their way into theaters. I think the zombie romances were probably the straw that broke the camel's back.

And here my first published novel was a superhero story before Disney started their run with Marvel properties such as Captain America, etc. Guess that I was a few years too early.
