An increasing number of young adults identify as nonheterosexual and noncisgender, according to a new global survey from Ipsos.

The results, released Wednesday, are based on internet surveys of more than 19,000 people in 27 countries ages 16 or 18 (depending on the country) to 74. The surveys were conducted in the languages of each country.

Respondents in Generation Z, which includes people born after 1997, were nearly four times as likely than those over 40 (4 percent compared to 1 percent) to identify as transgender, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming, gender-fluid or "in another way."

They were also the age group most likely to identify as something other than heterosexual. Overall, 9 percent of respondents identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual or asexual; for Generation Z, the figure doubles to 18 percent.

Previous surveys of young Americans have pointed to this phenomenon: In a Gallup poll last year, 5.6 percent of U.S. respondents overall identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, while 16 percent of those in Generation Z reported being LGBTQ.

"The patterns that we see in the U.S. are definitely not unique to the U.S.," Nicolas Boyon, senior vice president of public affairs at Ipsos, said of the higher rate of gender and sexual fluidity among Gen Z. "It's a global phenomenon."

Lol, I do it just because Im bound to code

Theres only so much I can change, I mean - Ive made out with guys but I still identify as straight if people really go and ask me because I generally let people decide what I am as I carry on doing whatever

I dont feel bi I guess (forgive my wording, I just really dont know) I just think certain men are very beautiful and or hot

I guess its like smoking copious amounts of weed and saying Im not a pothead per se

Denial I guess at the basic level >_>

but yeah, Ill let people decide and just say yeah

I mostly am in the camp of just not wanting to be evaluated based on gender or sexuality, Id much rather be seen for what I do and how I treat others than for what I am. Yeh, I have an identity based on those metrics, but its not really something i believe 99% of others need to concern themselves with.

I think it's great. These are steps towards a world where sexuality and gender identity are just another aspect of our lives rather than "an issue".

I just wouldnt want to invalidate the significance of peoples titles knowing its important to them

My whole life was based around image.. my parents were immigrants and made wealth happen so it was always about looking presentable to others in character or self. It was compounded even more by religion and by the time I was 9(???) I really learned and honed in that the racism I had been told about so much was the result of image

I hated that life so much that I kept telling myself that I could be everything and anything - but not having direction or acknowledging descriptors that give you shape in life meant that theres an indifference towards things that doesnt really lead to good things

I even came to hate the entirety of Merriam Webster for trying to tell me this is the accepted - the standard or basis in which

Nowadays I dont tell people what I am.. I used to say hey Im just me, but thats sorta too dismissive for my tastes. I say nowadays what do you think I am and I carry that with me in my heart mostly because the most important I in my life sometimes is the one that comes from you

Balance guess Im trying to find balance at this point in my life in accepting myself and then realizing what I want to be for others

Its hard to do it when theres a definition for every microcosm of instance of time nowadays.. expected outcomes all laid out and the future even predicted for us

but tl;dr I absolutely feel you in regards to identity - I really do. I do have pride in others and their ability to set themselves in stone as they want to be. I admire that so much honestly and anyone is capable of having that story which is why I guess I wound up a people person lol I was always interested in people and how they considered themselves.. sucked when they would tell me they didn't feel 'right' or 'good looking' for 'x' reason

Haha, nah -- they were good cookies. They were just super young, dumb, and finally looking at how money can pile up in this country and trying to make a life happen for my brothers and me that I did have to spend alot of time figuring things out on my own.

Without guidance you can sorta get lost pretty easily lol I learned how to be well for others, to always give yourself and to be charitable. To give thanks to others and all that

but not so much about me or who I am >_> I feel like I'm getting too old to care honestly, I do enjoy just making others happy when I can. I like knowing my day ended with making someone feel good or making them smile. As long as no one asks me about me I guess I'll be fine :P
