not surprising. i've helped one person that was drowning, it was a kid in a wave pool at a water park that must have been around 10 or so (i was 15 or 16 at the time); and fun fact about helping a drowning person, they will pull you under water to keep themselves above it...

That's one of the reasons lifeguards carry rescue buoys. Not only for flotation, it gives the drowning person something to hang onto that's not you

Not to sound holier than thou, but this is exactly the reason why they emphasize putting a life jacket on around water, even if you're not in a boat. This tragedy could have been prevented.
