If this is primarily going to be for video editing with some light gaming on the side then id invest in two things, a really good CPU (the more cores, the better) and plenty of ram (32gb MINIMUM). As time goes on the cpu tends to be one of the more harder things to upgrade in a pc since motherboards tend to phase out older cpu chips (which means instead of just upgrading the cpu you might have to upgrade the motherboard as well which might even mean the RAM too. it can get expensive). this is less of an issue with the pc's other components. so because of that its best to get the best cpu you can afford so you dont have to deal with that issue as quickly down the line. hard drives are also going to be a big thing, but those tend to be cheap enough that you can just add more down the line as you see fit and delete stuff you dont need. a quality power supply is important too, but $100-150 will get you a really good one that will power what you need.

the other parts you obviously dont want to skimp out on too heavily, but you can get by on more middle of the road stuff and upgrade as you go along. with the way gpu prices are going id get something fairly "cheap" (like a 1660 [if you can find them for $300] and wait for the prices to come back down on something more tangible (like the 3060, 3070, 3080's ect. which are currently going for about double than what they should be).

Do you think I'll be able to get all that under $2000? I want to cap it there

That's a lot cheaper than the one I posted. Is it better or worse tho

I don't know a lot about computers. All I know is I want a fast one.
Sorry, I just noticed there were new posts in this topic. The build you posted from logical increments is better than what I linked, but that's not a pre-built, so you'd be building it yourself.

In which case, your issue would be finding a 1660 that's not massively overpriced. That's the only reason people aren't recommending building it yourself right now. Demand for GPU's are sky high, while the supply is low due to covid shutting down factories. Buying a pre-built computer means the company sells everything for closer to the normal price.

That said, what I linked was a budget build. basically something that can handle up to 4k competently, but nowhere near top of the line. So if you find something else that catches your eye, by all means

I don't like what you're saying about being old and not supported soon. And idk what scrobbling means, but that sounds horrible. I intend to learn video editing as a job so do you think it's best to pay extra for the investment?
Don't worry too much about hardware being "old". All he's saying is that in the future, if you decide to upgrade your cpu, you'll have to upgrade the motherboard as well. But it won't be an issue before that.

Also, I'm pretty sure that was a typo and he meant "scrubbing" the video, as in jumping to a specific point in the video.

And as for what a CPU does, it basically handles tasks for your computer. In the case of video editing, the cpu would be the one encoding and rendering your videos. The stronger the CPU, the faster it will be able to do tasks.

Ram doesn't "run" the programs per se. It acts as a quick temporary storage for the things you're opening. So, for insurance of you open your video editing software, that software's data will temporarily be stored in your systems memory so your cpu can access it faster.

One thing to note about pre-builts is that you still might have to wait a month or two for the PC to ship

What's a good website for pre-built? I keep getting stuck looking at individual parts.
