I think most kids need an authority figure. The people that I know whose parents were basically just friends to them, they ended up as pretty fucked up adults

Then again most people end up being pretty fucked up adults from I can tell so who really knows

I'd argue that if you don't manage both, you're doing it wrong. There's obviously a time and place for each, but treating them as being mutually exclusive is going to cause problems.
