I had 4 eggs, which were subsequently stolen by a thief, who then gave 3 back to me. As already mentioned roosters dont lay eggs.

If you are not counting the eggs from the Rooster , then you shouldnt count the eggs given by the thief, and the answer stands to reason that the OP had 4 good eggs of the 5, 3 of which were stolen, leaving him with 1 egg.

even if you believed the rooster laid the eggs, the option isn't there, so someone going with that answer wouldn't see it up there, and would know they were wrong as a result.

Yeah this is my thought too. But it's a bad riddle because having 4 eggs is also in past tense, meaning we cannot know for a certainty if the thief gave the 3 eggs b4 or after having 4 eggs. Also having a blatant lie with the rooster is mostly confusing because it calls to attention the authenticity of the rest of the riddle.

Honestly 2 ppl with a completely different answer could believably justify themselves. So yeah bad riddle

It doesn't matter that roosters can't normally lay eggs. The riddle's text explicitly states that the rooster did lay eggs. If you discounted or ignored unlikely or impossible situations from riddles you would have a lot of meaningless riddles.

Another twist is that roosters can be agressive and just because it is your rooster does not mean they are your eggs.

I looked it up and the answer is flawed.

Regardless, I was going to say that the first line could mean "I ATE four eggs," but that still gives me the answer 3 (with the provision that roosters do not, in fact, lay eggs). Of course, that last line could mean that my rooster got laid 5 times. I still am left with 3 eggs, though.

Yeah, this is a super dumb riddle where whoever is asking it can just tell you your answer was wrong.

If I had 4 eggs - "Well it said if, not that you actually had any"

and a thief gave me three - "I didn't say the thief gave you eggs, just 3 of something" or "it's a thief, they stole your 4 eggs and gave you back 3 of them"

And of course roosters don't lay eggs, so we can just ignore that part.

The thief gave him 3 eggs. You cant give someone 3. Thats like saying you dont know what hes asking how many he has of.

Grammatically they're linked, but I've read plenty of garbage riddles where they ignore that in their explanation.

Edit: What if the thief gave you three of the four that it said you had? That works grammatically and is yet another reason the riddle is BS.
