Steve Bouquet, a 54-year-old security guard, attacked the pet cats over a nine-month period near his home address, beginning October 2018.

Nine of the cats were stabbed to death, while a further seven survived their injuries.
Bouquet, who denied the charges of criminal damage and possession of a knife in a public space, was found guilty at Chichester Crown Court on Wednesday following an eight-day trial, police said.

The jury heard how the pet owners had incurred thousands of pounds in veterinary bills following the stabbings.

He will be sentenced on July 12.

Following reports of the stabbings, police were initially at a loss as to who was responsible.

"There were no witnesses to the savage acts and there was no indication as to who was responsible," Detective Inspector Chris Thompson said in a statement.

But the case took a turn in May 2019 when Bouquet was caught on CCTV stroking and then attacking a 9-month-old cat called Hendrix, who later died of its injuries.

"The [Hendrix's] owners discovered a trail of blood leading from the passageway to their home and then noticed a CCTV camera nearby. This had been set up by a neighbor whose own cat had suffered a similar fate, having been stabbed and killed a year before," Thompson said.

"We examined the footage and discovered that it had captured Bouquet stooping to stroke the cat before taking something from his rucksack and making a sudden jerk towards it."

Thompson described it as a "turning point" in the police investigation.

Two days later, on June 2, 2019, officers arrested the suspect and found a knife with cat DNA on the blade in his house.

Thompson added that police found evidence on Bouquet's computer that he had "repeatedly" visited a website about lost cats in the city and had viewed "numerous" videos of dogs killing cats.

Bouquet told police, who also found two photographs of dead cats on his devices, that he liked cats.

Fucking subhuman piece of filth. This is why you should never let your cat roam outside unsupervised. Just takes a minute for some fucking degenerate waste of oxygen to brutally murder your beloved pet.

I agree with the lion pit. Also I'm glad they found and charged him. There was a similar story out of TX where they dont have a suspect yet I believe.

While this crime is heinous, I don't think people murdering cats is all that common. Or is it and I'm out of touch?

I dont know how much truth is to it but I used to hear you should never let a pet black cat out on Halloween. Because some people would use it in rituals and kill it

Lots of sociopaths torture and kill animals. So do budding serial killers (and there are a lot more of them out there than ever get reported).

Is it a guarantee that if you let Mr. Fluffy Biscuits outside that someone is going to snatch him up and torture him before killing him? No, of course not. But between that, the danger of getting ran over by a car, getting attacked by dogs, getting eaten by foxes or coyotes, getting sick, etc., it just doesn't seem worth the risk.

But hey, I'm just someone whose mom felt sympathy for all the strays in the neighborhood and fed them. It's not like I saw firsthand what happened to them. I certainly never saw the mangled body of one I'd gotten particularly attached to smeared on the road the morning I had to take an algebra mid-term. I definitely never found an entire litter of kittens after they'd been mauled by the neighbor's shitty little Boston Terrier. And there's absolutely zero chance that a lot of the cats just... disappeared one day and I could only imagine what might have happened to them.

Keep your fucking cats inside, people. Princess isn't "depressed" because she can't go outside. Play with her and she'll be fine. Buy them toys and structures to stimulate their mind and give them a physical outlet. This shit isn't hard.

That's horrific. People also massively downplay what dogs will do to cats and think they're just cute innocent heckin pupperinos
Yeah, it was honestly traumatic at the time. I'd get attached to a cat and then... well, something would happen. And it hurt like hell each time. I cried over so many cats growing up that I can't even remember half of their names now. I didn't have the power to do anything about it back then. Hell, I had to fight and argue just to be able to bring one particularly sick cat into the house so I could give her medicine at certain times.

Now that I have my own place, my cats will never go outside. They get supervised time out on my screened in patio, but I don't leave them out there alone. They have plenty of toys, scratching posts, and towers to climb. They're happy and healthy. They will, hopefully, live to be very old and never know suffering or pain for as long as I'm able to care for them.

They also do it for superstitious reasons too and it is true.

I know around here that there's been at least 2 or 3 feral cats that were black, but chill/nice suddenly dead around halloween over the years. That's why I was worried about this big fluffy boi with black/chocolate fur last year, ended up hiding near the house all night instead of roaming. So probably helped.

Plus they tend to have mega low adoption rates for similiar reasons.

Yeah.. As a kid, my grandma would desex the stray cats and care for them.. They always went missing or would turn up injured.. Someone around the neighborhood was shooting them with bb guns and shit.

My cats absolutely are never allowed outside as a result.

I also wish I could encounter one of these shit bags and just beat the living fuck out of them.

Poor kitties. That makes me sad. My favorite childhood cat was black. I've always hated that people would hurt a cat just cause of its fur color.

That's not even the worst. We used to have a semi-feral cat colony not too far away. Talkin' 15-20 cats at one point. You could pet a few, but were mostly skittish.
Someone must of gotten fed up with them, because they started dropping like flies due being poisoned. Then it came down to just 2 black cats. One died around Halloween a few years later, the other endured by becoming someone's pet and hiding inside.
