Probably something about idol culture. It's super toxic. It's caused a lot of problems for some of the girls, the easiest example being Towa.

Fubuki and Matsuri have collabed with dudes plenty so it would be weird if that's the reason

Collaboration with guys seems to be ok, but I would wager since it's an anime there's probably a perverted character somewhere or something.

Tbf voice acting for an anime is kinda different than just streaming while putting on a voice. It's experience to a degree, but that doesn't guarantee you'd be good at anime voice acting.

If it's licensed, I don't see an issue. If people are having problem with them working with guys or whatever, they are dumb and shouldn't be acknowledged.

honestly, most of them their character voice is not too far off their actual voice. that said, considering all the attempts at impressions and acting out skits and etc that you see on stream here and there, I'm inclined to agree that most of them are not very good at voice acting

although if they're cameo-ing as... themselves?? I don't really see why voice acting would play into it in a big way

Polka is probably the best VA in Holo, maybe next to Fubuki. It's not like Matsuri is entirely inexperienced either. But several of the Holo girls have worked as a VA at one point or another I think

I mean they're just streamers in the end. They just use an avatar for a bit of anonymity. There's a "character" to play but it usually boils down to using certain words to prevent themselves from... well, doxxing themselves. Hell, a lot don't even bother with that part.

So, I mean, if your criteria for finding streamers entertaining is being a brain dead 12 year old when it's easily one of the quickest growing entertainment platforms... I'd say it's more a case of cantankerous old man yelling at the sky.

So what's the deal with Vtubers? Ever since they started showing up in my youtube recommedations (despite never watching one), I've been wondering about them. They're just streamers, right? But they use a little cartoon/anime avatar? Is that all that separates them from regular streamers? >_>

the overlay and anonymity allow them to put on a persona that lets them act a little more wacky and off the wall than they would otherwise, you generally see them cutting loose and being a less inhibited. They also sometimes play a wacky character which can frame the stream in a way you wouldn't get if they were using a normal facecam.

The most notable ones are part of a company since they tend to get mass reported and Youtube is shitty and wouldn't overturn them unless an official company gets them to.

Yes, it's harder to overturn youtube channel takedowns without company backing. And yes, the most notable ones tend to be part of a company. But I think that's mostly just because companies can provide advertising/publicity, support with things like tech / avatars / designs / etc, help push for tie-ins / collabs outside the company, and just generally assist in managing things

There's so many random small indie vtubers (or even just smallish companies) that aren't really well known because they don't have the instant publicity that comes from being attached to a big known brand name. Can't get big if you don't stand out somehow for people to find you in the first place
