What is there to feel sorry about the kids? I am sure their life is going to full of success.

Let me ask a question what is better between these options:

1st getting many qualifications and degree early in life so they can get more and then open many possibilities of great jobs.

2nd not getting any qualifications and degree early and having to live on minimum wage job.

In my opinion I think the parents did right.

When I went to college there was a kid like this at the school. Graduated with two BAs at like 14. Occasionally the school paper would interview him and whatever hew knew from his classes, he was incredibly nave about people, relationships and life.

I was like 19 or 20 at the time and people at that age don't really know shit about shit, but I could tell this guy really didn't know shit about shit.

Wanting to make people immortal is really, really nave.
Just to expand, I always thought this kid might have been better off spending a year or two living on like a farm - tough because this was Los Angeles but seeing birth, death, pain, suffering that up close might have given him some perspective.

I know nothing of farm life and prefer cities but as I understand it, people see the circle of life more immediately on a farm.

Have a kid. Train them to go to college at 9 years old and search for the way to exterminate mankind most efficiently.

So that the parents can gush about their amazing child and all the records they broke.
I'm willing to believe the kid does appreciate the challenge to a certain extent, but.. yes. That is absolutely the case.

Let me translate a paragraph from a news article about him leaving Eindhoven University two years ago:
Appearances on the TV Show, interviews in national and international media. Even CNN reported on Laurent and his unprecedented abilities. Media that did not report on the child prodigy by themselves were called by his father to report on the unique development of his son. In the newspaper De Telegraaf he even complained about the lack of an invitation from the king or the prime minister. "Something like that would be completely normal in America," Simons said.

That is really bad of the parents, they should want the kid to be successful but they shouldn't get the media involved. The parents shouldn't try to get famous due to their kids accomplishments.

No thanks. Don't think I want to be here any longer than the average lifespan

You sure about that? With a longer life span that would give you more time to accomplish any goal or dream you have.

Less life span means less chance to accomplish one goal and dream.

Yeah, no thanks kid.
One, it's impossible.
Two, mechanical parts break down and stop working. Ask anyone who has ever owned a car, or a dishwasher.
Three that would be bad for the planet, and yes people, because overpopulation, failing resources and less space are quickly becoming reality.

However, kids dream big, so keep dreaming.

Truth. Due to the damage mankind and our creations have done to the planet we are already facing overpopulation issues when it comes to resources because they are dwindling and / or being over harvested, despite having tons of land that is unpopulated. There is no way the various government organizations are gonna be okay making everyday people immortal to further tax the planet. I get he's just a kid despite being very intelligent, but c'mon, he should be able to foresee this.

lol Poor naive Laurent. He still has much to learn about life and the tyranical rule of the government. Even if he somehow did find a way they would never allow 95% of the population access to such a treatment. Only those in power and possibly the rich who aid them will be allowed access. Hell the government would probably forcibly confiscate his research once they feel they have enough and possibly even kill him to keep other governments from finding out.
Exactly.
That alone would cause me to step out of line if it was free.
These people have screwed up the planet and make life miserable already.
Living forever with them would be a more fitting prison sentence than anything else.
Ill happily check out at whatever age Im gonna check out.

when you copy someones brain its no longer that person. you're just making copies while the original dies.

this makes me sad

like say we eventually reach the point where I can upload my brain to a computer so I can live on and converse with my family

to them, that computer-me is the same me I am right now

only the me I am right now will be gone and unable to experience those new memories

so whats the damn point in consciousness uploading

Also IIRC the accurate translation was that a moon cycle was considered a year during those times.

The bible as we know it today is long overdue for a retranslation but you know churches would absolutely object this.
