About a year and a half ago, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made headlines after she downplayed election wins for Democrats in solidly Democrat districts, including her own. She also mentioned Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and said a "glass of water" with a "D" next to it could win. "[S]he's a wonderful member of Congress as I think all of our colleagues will attest. But those are districts that are solidly Democratic," Pelosi, D-Calif., said at the time. The comment was widely embraced by Republicans who have been trying to gauge Ocasio-Cortez's influence on a much larger scale. Could she defeat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., in a race for the Senate? Can she be the mayor of New York? Ocasio-Cortez herself has left open the possibility of a Senate run in the past.

The victory by Eric Adams, a former police captain, in New York City's Democratic primary for mayor could be an indicator that the congresswomans sway in her own city is exaggerated. In the first round of voting in the primary, Ocasio-Cortez endorsed progressive candidate Maya Wiley and ranked Scott Stringer as her second choice. Neither candidate even advanced to the final round, where Adams faced off against Kathryn Garcia in a close contest.

Not surprised at all the poll numbers show rich white people are the ones voting for the AOC/Bernie Sanders crowd. They dont do well with minorities.

Lmao, no way am I reading a Fox News story about AOC

You may not like the source but doesn't change the results. A non progressive who is against Defund the Police is going won the Dem primary and is pretty much going to be the next mayor of NYC.

Honestly there are times where I feel like a lot of AOC's overall influence is the result of the conservatives turning her into some sort of boogie man following her initial win. She was a young, progressive who unseated the old-guard democrat. She is the great socialist threat we have been warning you about. Blah blah blah. It was a lot of attention on an otherwise nobody freshman representative. And made her way more prominent, despite hardly being the only progressive in the House.

That isn't to take away from any of her beliefs, actions, or stances. She has done a great job of engaging with people and has leveraged her visibility very well. I just wonder how prominent she would be if people like Fox News weren't all but branding her a Horseman of the Apocalypse and instead paid her as much mind as any other new Democrat congressperson.

The candidate AOC endorsed was one of the worst in the race, especially on housing. She's the epitome of what's popular on the internet is almost never right.

Progressive groups need to unify amongst themselves around 1 candidate and need to message/outreach/coalition build better.

Don't be shocked when moderates win primaries and progressives lose, they're good at all those things while progressives tend to be crap at them

this was a ranked choice primary right? so even if there was a division within the progressive group i cant see why at least one of their candidates wouldn't do well if there was an actually significant progressive movement in nyc.

It also has to be a good candidate who isn't hyper divisive and doesn't tout things like socialism as well.

There really wasn't a good leftist candidate in this race though. You only had two: Maya Wiley, a MSNBC host with little actual political experience who wasn't *that* left(no more left than, say, Liz Warren), who lost by just a few points and Dianne Morales, a former non-profit exec who was the only candidate to pick up "defund the police" but torpedoed herself by creating a toxic work environment and trying to break her campaign's union.
Adams, meanwhile, had the full backing of the NYPD and all kinds of centrist PACs and politicians. Unfortunately, a lot of liberals have a NIMBY attitude about police brutality, or only care about it when it's being done by Republicans.

At the same time, the DSA picked up two city council seats.

The infuriating thing is that progressives tend to win the war on messaging/culture but they just suck at winning elections.

If they could just play the game better then they'd be set

Holy shit you're telling me AOC doesn't have the power to make every primary in her city go the way she wants simply by her own willpower?

SHOCKING

Don't worry though, Fox News will still go back to saying she has the power to single handedly destroy all of America by tomorrow.

Yeah people in general tend to be more conservative than what we see in social media cliques.

We'd like to think the country is divided in half between republicans and democrats, but really it's divided between voters against themselves, and non voters.

Didn't she endorse Wiley with less than a week remaining and while early voting was already happening?

If that's the case, that endorsement came way too late to make a meaningful difference.
