I still think it's the worst 2D Metroid, but it was fun. Mother Brain can fuck right off though, stupid stupid fight.

Also guys when I won at the end Metroid took off his helmet and it turned out Metroid is a girl!

I think Metroid 2 is much better. You start with full health, and you can crouch shoot and shoot down. Whoever decided to start you with 30 health every time in Metroid is a sadist. Metroid 2 has saves, too.

I would. Metroid 2 isn't bad, just not really what you think of as a Metroid game, since it is more linear with less "hidden" items. It works for the Gameboy though, and that is what is important.

The original, as influential of a game as it is, is just way too cryptic and downright frustrating. Zero Mission improved on it in every conceivable way and made it obsolete.

Zero Mission is a great game. I played NES Metroid with a map for reference, I wasn't in the mood for drawing my own. I did kinda like that there are entire paths that have no benefit to going down, though. Not even a single item. Would have been cool to try to figure out where to go.

Ya, Metroid 1 was more of a maze game... I mean, hell, Ridley is outright down a SECRET passage that you might never find.

Metroid 2 is more of a linear action game, but it still has upgradey elements and still follows the original spirit of the series, which apparently is getting lost in the Japanese Metro (yes, the long corridors are meant to be similar to track lines, with item rooms being akin to ruined/collapsed stations)

Super Metroid deviated from the original design to become, well, the origin of the best genre

My advice to play Metroid 1 is with the Invincible code + a map. That'll mitigate most of the frustration.

Metroid 2 is still better than Metroid 1 IMO.

Having a map is preferable though.

While it's rather different from the original game, the Metroid 2 remake on the 3DS is muuuuuuch easier to play and not get lost in.

Play that if you really want to play a Metroid 2.

Good guide. I had a map that had all the powerups marked.

In terms of difficulty, it starts hard, then it's easy once you get Screw Attack basically all the way to Mother Brain (Kraid was a bit tough too, didn't die but I almost die, though I was careless). And then Mother Brain is hard in a super frustrating way. Also, do Kraid and Ridley take more damage depending on which one you fight first? I melted Ridley (fought him first).'

Also, did the original manual mention anything about needing the ice beam for Metroids? That section would have been a nightmare if I didn't know that from background knowledge.

I liked Return of Samus. I'm playing Samus Returns now. I really dislike how weak I feel in Samus Returns. You take so much damage, even with the Varia Suit. I also got AM2R which I'll play eventually. I love me some Metroid.

And of course I preordered Metroid Dread the day I found out about it, which is what prompted me to go back and play all of these.

I don't really like how central to the combat the Melee counter is in Samus Returns. Other than that it's still probably one of my favourite games on the 3DS.

I have yet to try AM2R though. I need a decent PC for that and my Lap top sucks, it can barely play the old Command & Conquer games from 20+ years ago lol

Metroid 2 was a pretty big deal on release, playing it on release made it feel like one of the most expansive games in the OG Game Boy library.

To be fair, leaving Lower Norfair in Super Metroid requires you to go through a secret passage that not even the X-Ray Scope will reveal. So either before Ridley or after him, necessary secret passages were apparently a tradition.

I guess since X-Ray is an optional item, you might not even have it at the time so it doesn't matter they don't reveal it. And the room has a fairly long path up to the secret passage, so most players will probably look for something at the end of the path. Unless you trust the X-Ray scope that there's nothing behind that wall.

What's amusing is so far those cease and desists usually come the day it comes out, it seems like Nintendo doesn't want to disrupt these fan projects early on but to protect their copyright they do it the day they actually release the game.

AM2R didn't get a single threat from Nintendo until the final game was ready to release.

I think they just want to not get involved until it's actually coming out, that way they are still protecting their IP and still letting people appreciate Metroid and make fan games.

If they don't protect the IP they could literally lose it.

Metroid 2 also contributed to the evolution of Samus' look. Because they couldn't do color-switiching, they had to increase the size of the shoulder armor to signify the Varia suit upgrade, and 'open' the end of the cannon to differentiate between blaster and missile launcher.

It's not hard, just annoying.

After taking out the barrier with missiles hop down into the lava and freeze those 3 cheerios, then jump back up and stand on them. Fire missiles into Mother Brain until the cheerios thaw then do it all over again.

Getting accidentally hit by those little ceiling cannons or having trouble with the lava are the only things you have to worry about but they're not too bad. If you're purposely trying to win using the wave beam though this whole area is really hard to get through. I think I've done this two times ever.

This kind of stuff is what I had the most problems with when I originally played this in the old days. Like I never knew you had to bomb areas that didn't look like those destructible regenerating blocks. The secret you refer to is also the only way to get the high jump boots, which you need to go tons of places later.

Really guys, the actual core gameplay loop of Other M is the same as all the other Metroids, only you get GRAPHICS on top of that

Sir do not defend Other M

Aside from using missiles, the hunt the pixel segments, and the story, Other M isn't bad. Taken as a complete package though, it's exceptionally terrible.
