she knew the rules and thought it'd be okay to break them because it's legal in most places in America. she acknowledges that she messed up.

the rule is stupid and many people acknowledge it needs changing.

with that said, let's hope it was a learning lesson for both entities. that rule needs to go, but she also needs to understand that she's no exception.

Yea, they don't really care about pot, it's a 1 month suspension that can be reduced with going to a class. Any other time than the Olympic trials and it wouldn't even make the news.

I don't know if she's a regular smoker or not, but she had recently found out from a damn reporter that her mother died. Imagine being blindsided in an interview by learning that your mother died. She said she smoked to escape the pain.

The rule is very dumb. But it is a known rule and I understand and respect that she violated it and cannot participate as a result. But the question isn't "Do I think she was appropriately suspended?" it is "Do I think she should be allowed to compete?". Which I do since the rule is dumb.

Yeah I think the rule is bad too. If you can drink then smoking shouldn't be bad drinking is worse.

If it was up to me I'd let her run too as well as anyone who happens to be in the same situation. I wish she had avoided smoking though it was a great opportunity that she missed out on

No she shouldnt run. The IOC has a set of rules that are applied to athletes from every country and to allow an exception simply because one person is supposed to be the best in their event would start a snowball effect, or backlash if others are not afforded the same exceptions for using banned substances. The IOC should revise the rule following the Tokyo games to be more lenient, or outright remove marijuana from the list of banned substances. Until then, the athletes must abide by the committees rules. Miss Richardson made a costly mistake, owned that mistake, and plans on competing at the next World Championship. This issue is dead.

Actually, she won't, in all likelihood. Olympians train to be at their absolute peak during their competition year. Her next opportunity will be four years from now and that's an eternity for Olympic levels. She won't be old by any means, but she won't be at the peak she's reached now.

It's a stupid rule and someone has to challenge it for things to ever change.

It definitely sucks. I get it but its not like she's going to be high that day. I'm sure they'll test before she runs. Is weed really a performance enhancer? I guess it dulls pain, but I don't think it'll make you run faster. Was really looking forward to see her run.

The US has no play in making the rules. This was done in accordance with IOC rules that are followed world wide by countries that havent relaxed their stances on marijuana. Its still illegal in Japan. So while she technically didnt do anything wrong by our standards, she still broke the rules and was punished.

Some countries still make homosexuality or speaking out against the government illegal, yet we wouldn't defend an American being banned from the Olympics or the World Cup for that.

Besides the point. The IOC doesnt have rules based on sexual orientation or freedom of speech, nor would they because those issues go beyond athletic competition. They evaluated the trans person issue because it affects competition, basically allowing those born biological males to compete with those born biological women.

Drugs and other substances also affect competition. Many can very well boost athletic performance. Marijuana can be used as a pain killer and anti inflammatory, which may or may not give advantages to those that use it. If it were allowed, other countries would be at a disadvantage simply because of the legality of it.
