Do you think he's making a mistake?

22 y/o Top Team USA Swimmer Michael Andrew who is expected to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics has admitted he will NOT get the COVID-19 vaccine because he DOESN'T trust the side effects after only a year of testing!!

The star athlete will compete in the 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre breaststroke and 200 metre individual medley and told reporters he already got COVID-19 months prior and hasn't been vaccinatd nor will he EVER get the vaccine

He said "My reason behind it is i, for one, it was kind of a last moment, i didn't want to put anything in my body that i didn't know how i would potentially react to. As an athlete on the elite level, everything we do is very calculated. For me in the training cycle, especially leading up to the trials, i didn't want to risk any days out because we do know that there are periods where, getting the vaccine, you have to deal with days off"

Common side effects of the vaccine inclde arm pain and swelling, tiredness, muscle aches, chills, fever and nausea.

Despite being unvaccinated, he plans to stay with the rest of the US swimming team in the Olympic Village in Tokyo. They say they feel safe thansk to their team's strict protocls that involve daily testing and social distancing and mask wearing

He won 4 gold medals in 2018 and the Worlds and is likely going to win gold in Tokyo.

When asked about getting it after the olympics, he simply said "I personally do not plan on getting it in the future either. We'll see as things go forward but right now it's too early to get this vaccine"

If he tests positive at the Olympics he could be DISQUALIFIED from competing as vaccines are not mandatory but with Japan still dealing with the pandemic as only 14% of the population is vaccinated and any despite calls to cancel the olympics, any athlete who tests positive could be DQ'd..

Tokyo Olympics begins on July 23rd when the first big event where the world comes together begins..

Do you think he's making a mistake?

Just because you sports good, doesn't mean you brain good.

He just has to hope that the precautions taken by the IOC and the Japanese government are sufficient to protect him (RIP Mikey Drew, April 1999 - August 2021)

I think I heard as long as you test negative to a covid test, you can compete

Its probably not the best idea since Tokyo recently went into a state of emergency over the china bat fever, but like most places in the world, its all up to the individual whether they want the shot or not

Honestly, I can respect this as a reason to avoid getting the shot (at least until after the Olympics). This close to the competition, Olympic athletes are in a position where taking a couple unplanned days off from training (especially days off that will consist mostly of lying around doing nothing) could completely undermine everything they've done to prepare over the last five years, and there's a good chance getting the shot (mostly the second one, but also possibly the first) will force them to do that. It's certainly suboptimal, public health-wise, but Olympians are such a tiny portion of the population that I don't think that's overly consequential.

They should, however, definitely be isolating for two weeks upon returning to their home countries if they aren't vaccinated. This is very high-risk travel.

Considering the circumstances where the vaccine might interfere with his performance in this Olympics (even in the case of losing a few days of training which can have an impact), the hesitation makes sense. Even in general where his body is his career (and where in theory he should be more able to recover from it anyway), I can understand him having more concerns than other people.

I imagine he's being quarantined, tested, etc, where there's an overabundance of caution being used.

The risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome after receiving the Janssen vaccine is 7 per 1 million women aged 18-49. It's even rarer for men and women over 50. Keep in mind this is a serious but not necessarily fatal complication.

The mortality rate for COVID-19 is 1.8% in the US, and 2.4% in the UK. That means 18 out of every 1000 US patients will die from the disease.

18,000 people out of 1 million infected will die from COVID in the US, while just 7 out of 1 million will experience a potentially serious side effect from the vaccine.

Even if it were instantly fatal, that's still just 0.0007% mortality vs 1.8% mortality from COVID (or higher, depending on your country). And that doesn't include the myriad possible complications from COVID, like thrombosis, ARDS, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, liver injury, stroke, encephalitis, fungal infections, and Long COVID, which afflicts 10-20% of COVID patients.

But can I avoid corona? If I get the vaccine, that's it, I'm exposed to the vaccine. Now it's a matter of whether or not I suffer the complications.

But corona, I might dodge that entirely for the rest of my life. I've dodged it so far, despite a number of scares I always test negative. Maybe I just won't catch it.

For further context, ~0.15% of the US population has been killed by Covid. Obviously, given the variation in risk level between different demographics, treating that as a blanket "chance for every American to die of Covid" isn't altogether accurate, but that's still a 200-fold difference (and that's pretending that 0.0007% is actually a mortality rate and not just morbidity).

Beyond that there were people in initial test batches that had it much earlier on, like 5ish months after Covid hit the scene in America. People can't grasp that a lot of why Vaccines take forever to get through is due to mostly government red tape, the Covid one was fast tracked but they still required all the hoops to jump through.

We also had previous work on a Covid vaccine before this became a problem in America that helped speed this along.

I disagree with your assertion. Star power is a by product of both skill and popularity. The biggest stars in music and cinema are not necessarily the best at their craft. Moreover, in an individual sport, theres multiple examples where the biggest star isnt the best, Conor McGregor and Tiger Woods being prime examples.

Secondly, he isnt the most successful swimmer. This is actually his first Olympics meaning both multiple swimmers and athletes from other sports have better resumes.

that's just the percent of the population in the US that has died so far, and may even be an under reported figure, once excess deaths have been modelled in, that number will be higher.

Well that is precisely why we have to rely on models for excess deaths, individual jurisdictions made up their own rules regarding what constitutes a death from COVID, and to this day there are still jurisdictions fudging the numbers (if not outright lying about them) so we may never actually know the true cost of this virus in our lifetimes.

I got my second shot (Moderna) last Wednesday, I will have the full protection available to me by next Wednesday. My arm is still a little sore and I have been lethargic, but otherwise I feel fine.

I don't know what they are offering where you live but the mRNA is your best bet, if you are still hesitant about the new technology they try to get a Jensen or AZ shot; thanks to the spread of delta and gamma, this time next year governments will be talking about booster shots, so heads up.
