Except for Republicans not potentially wanting two additional Democrats in the senate, what are the real reasons for not making the federal land smaller so that it only contains the federal buildings (where the White House, Congress, etc.) and make the remainder a state?

These

There's legit not a reason other than not wanting Dems more representation in the Senate.

The argument Ive seen used is that the Founding Fathers set up a district specifically to not be a part of the US to preventsomething. Fuck knows tbh its all bullshit.

It would be a guaranteed 2 more dem senate seats so thats why it wont happen.
Nah that argument makes sense since I believe PA tried to take over Congress because they didnt pay PA or something like that. The federal government didnt want to be at the mercy of a state government so it made its own area.

The fix is to redraw these borders to just include critical parts of DC, and make the remainder a state or integrate the remainder into surrounding states.

Why not just let Virginia or Maryland take over DC instead of making it a tiny state?

Republicans on CE like to say the population is too small, then conveniently leave the topic when its pointed out that existing states have less people

Virginia and Maryland consent is needed and neither of them want this

Just give them the option to go to Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia or Delaware

50 is too aesthetically pleasing

So that would exclude Northwest DC, which is mostly Federal area. Southwest is private companies, Southeast and Northeast DC are residential areas.

Lets talk about why some states are two states.

South Carolina
North Carolina
South Dakota
North Dakota
Virginia
West Virginia

Blatant power grabs that benefitted who in the end?
Dakotas split because of a dispute in the capitol location; Virginia split because of disagreement with slavery. No idea about Carolinas.

It's on land that originally belonged Maryland and Virginia which was given up for the purpose of making a federal district for one.

Yes and no. The part that Virginia gave up was returned to the state in March 1847 and became the city of Alexendria.

50 is a nice round number

Good point. Add DC and Puerto Rico, combine North/South Dakota and Idaho/Wyoming and you stick at 50

And real talk here. When the U.S. was founded, DC was a mostly undrained swamp occupied by slaves - building the White House and shit like that - and their owners - who could as white, male landowners vote in their home state. The only ones who could vote btw.

No serious thought was given to giving them the representation that all Americans elsewhere enjoy.

DC pays more in taxes than some states, and sends more people to the military than some states.

DC has all the responsibilities of a state, yet has few to none of the revenue or law enforcement capabilities of a state. They had to ask Drumpf for help on 1/6 and only Pence made the call to the Pentagon.

Beat me to it but this is correct. There is no legitimate excuse for being against DC statehood. Open up the history books, read the laws.

It's a "muh feels" thing adopted by the right. I'll leave it to others to guess what those feelings are.

^Actually, both Virginia and Maryland could say no, and yet DC could still be admitted as long as 3/4ths of the states agree, per the Constitution.
