lots of people I know think that the $300 unemployment boost is making people lazy to work

there is plenty of jobs available in restaurants, retail, and others but somehow they all stay unfilled

are people gonna come back to take those jobs once the $300 is over?

once people no longer make more than they do working and the covid evictions are lifted we'll see a return to work in the dead end jobs for sure, It's the employers waiting out the employees, not the other way around

It's been gone here for 3 weeks. Local Denny's is lucky to have 2 servers on a shift and 2 people in the kitchen.

Why would they want to?

The whole point of a job is to earn a living, but when so few jobs actually provide such a thing, why even bother working at all?

I mean. how else are they gonna make a living?

If the only job a guy can get is Dennys or Target would you choose nothing and be unemployed and have no money coming in over working?

Well, when stores are willing to pay an amount people will work for then they'll get employees. That's how the free market works.

No. The jig is up for those shit jobs. People are more aware now. Sure, some people will slink back, but the market for labor is too hot to rake them over the coals like they have en masse.

Nah they probably switched over to other jobs like delivering for doordash/Uber eats/etc, or customer service at home. My brother in law was on unemployment for a long time and then got a job making $20/hour doing customer service at home. Its not that the $300 extra makes them lazy, it gave them time to line up better things.

Data says unemployment is generally low, and (as seen in this thread already) we have numerous anecdotes from places that have already ended the bonus where these jobs are still not being filled. So no, I don't think the $300 boost is why these jobs aren't being filled, and therefore I don't think ending it will get them filled.

You know if it's get too expensive people will either put up with the higher prices or stop going there entirely, in which case the place shuts down.

The thing is. what people dont understand is thats how the market is for these kind of workers

Most retail stores or fast food places will lose money if they have to pay their guys $20/hr and up

guess they'll have to hold out for a cheaper automated option. they can hope that their workers don't all quit before then.

Nope and anyone who says differently is wrong. Many of these jobs don't want to fix their staffing problems. They created them on purpose.
