why are the simplest things hidden as shift/alt/ctrl variations?
why is it so hard to simply copy past and move a selection?
why is drawing the exact same line (a simple 32x16), drawn the same way three times, but then the fourth is different?

like, i know some of this has to just be because it's new to me. but it's completely baffling to me how people didn't trash this immediately.

My experience is once you learned, it wasnt a problem.....

...... but the features were so obscure. It feels like a time-suck. In other words, I agree.

Not bad for a free prog tho

I used gimp a lot in grad school, but mostly just for pasting a bunch of things together into a single image, so nothing complicated.

The frustration of learning Illustrator, however, has been worse. But that's probably because I've been doing more complicated things.

It's so close to Photoshop it's insane.

Also if you can't find a feature there's a handy search button at the top.

I use Gimp for creating 2D character models with moving faces & fingers using a wide variety of techniques.

I agree with the other posters that you are looking for a different program.

the problem is, i'm not really trying to learn gimp. i'm trying to learn unity. i just wanted to make a few alphatest sprtes for myself instead of using someone else's. so i'd have an idea on what i'd need to do or buy later on in the project.

Yeah, ages ago an ex wanted to have a dom and sub relationship dynamic.

She got upset when I didnt give her permission to eat her lunch while she was at work and I was like wtf? Why would you need to ask permission? Apparently it meant that I had to micromanage her life for her.

Okay. Ill be honest.

Even once you learn how to do what you want, it will probably take a lot of trial & error to gather a few nuggets from the mayhem of failure. Thats how these things tend to go. If you want big, you gotta do big. Thats why most amateur first-time-at-the-park games you see kinda look like doo-doo. If you have a vision, start with the most basic elements and kinda go from there and see what happens. Then plug in the more complicated elements on top of what you have. What youre expecting will probably definitely probably not be what comes out of it. Dont be afraid to discover the true form & style of the sprite. Thats my advice at least.

but yea I dont want to cloud your vision too much

Theres more than one way to make an omelette when it comes to Unity, Gimp, and Sprites.

@Medussa
If you want to make pixel art, buy Aseprite (or compile it from source if you want it free; learning how to do this if you don't know is less painful and quicker than using Gimp for literally anything). If you want a cheap photoshop alternative, buy Affinity Photo. For vector graphics, go with Inkscape and buy Affinity Designer later on if you think you need it (there is a generous 30 day trial for both Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer). If you want to do digital painting, download Krita.

There is no reason to use Gimp for anything. Just don't.

truer words...

anyway, buying anything is off the table at the moment, but i'll definitely save the recs for when that changes. much thanks.

edit: Aseprite looks very much like what i'm looking for. not a terrible price tag, either.

i appreciate this, and it is basically what i'm doing. the game part itself is 100% doable. but art is not my strong suit. still, it would have been nice to get everything working with shitty self made sprites.

Cool! But it does look very much restricted to Pixel Art on a glance. Correct? Or no?

Krita is good! I recall there being some complication with it that I stuck with Gimp. But yeah, Krita gets good reviews.

Whats the gripe with Gimp?

Im trying to recall. I think it was easier to edit the honestly super complicated sprites i do in-house with Gimp, where Krita seemed more geared towards making more standard-looking stuff from scratch. I do a weird paper-doll + bending + traditional spritework & change the lighting & manipulate the textures to give a natural feel. Blah blah blah. I seem to recall it being easier to just draw in Krita in comparison.

@Medussa
It might be because it's early, but I'm not a hundred percent sure why you think you need to buy anything. Might be my fault too for not being clear. If you are making 2D game art, you are either doing pixel art or vector art. For vector art, you can get professional results with Inkscape. For pixel art, you can compile Aseprite from source if you need it free. If that's too much work, you can use Piskel which is a free online tool. For 3D, there is Blender. All of that is free. If you want paid, Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo are best value for the money, but you don't need either of them for game art.

What Google says

GIMP vs Krita: The Verdict
If you are looking for software that does everything from image editing to painting and has a wide range of features, GIMP is perfect for you. If you want the software to make digital art, use Krita for its great brush selection and intuitive painting model.

So, basically seems along the lines of what i remember of Krita

Google again: Inkscape looks cool! At a glance ~ seems like basically the same thing but with more photoshop tools, for digital painting. You may have made an Inkscaper today. I wanna see more. To google x3 XD

yeah dude. Im gonna download Inkscape and give it a whirl. Kudos

you wanna make a flipping sprite? Make a flippin sprite.

If I took advice like that, I wouldnt have muh babies I got today. Beautiful, beautiful beautiful photorealistic sprites, slightly stylized (but in a photoreal way) & I tell no more. But yeah. Im so happy with my results. Its gorgeous. Theres nothing like seeing your vision come to life. You cant chase an experience like that. Love.

It takes some work tho. To get it right-right. I just want to reiterate that. Its all fun and games until you try to get your monster to walk lol

but if you get it right, its cosmically organically awesome

Develop your own techniques or grin and bear it with a tutorial

Yeah. I deleted my message earlier because I thought you were making a collage. But you will need at least an outside program like Photoshop PRO to get the results you really want, and then manipulate in Gimp. Thats what Im interested in Inkscape.

You need something to entertain yourself while youre learning all this technical junko. You know? That does it for me lol

and of course, seeing the fruits of my labor. I wish I felt comfortable enough to share here. But. Even if I did. Its mine. $$$$$$$

enjoy gimp

How does CE feel about collaborating on an FTP side-scroller where you play as the Gimp from Pulp Fiction & collect various weapons like chainsaw & sammie sword??? Lets do it. Ill cook up some basic renders and animations, mock-ups of the game, and a proposal for gameplay hawking something off newgrounds. Eh??

I've tried about three separate times to get used to Illustrator and I always failed to make it stick. Taking my Photoshop experience into account, it's like trying to re-learn how to steer a car with your feet - the simplest things are just different enough to be beyond your grasp, and you get frustrated that much more quickly because you already know how to drive a car and you think this should be easy.
