People are so emotional about driving

If everyone slowed down to the speed limit we could save thousands of lives every year

But everyone here is a professional driver

I think if the speed limit is like 30 and under, you do that number or under. I see no issue going 70 on a 65 mph highway.

We have speeding cameras where I live. going 5 miles over (almost 10km) will get you ticketed

But these are usually in residential areas where no one should be speeding.

Yah, but it all depends on the speed limit. Anything 35 and under Ill keep 5mph over as the max. If the limits like 50 or more then Ill keep it at 9mph or less over the limit.

uhh yeah especially on two wheels. Most people do 85 in the 70 zones. Gotta do 75 just to hang in the right lane.

25/35 highly residential zones keep it strict. No reason to go faster. Same for 45 zones if they're really busy. Sometimes 5 under depending on how busy.

Depends on where you live. I know the police in town here, fish with a couple of them, they always tell me out of state anything 5mph or over they will pull them for, they give a 5mph cushion in a 35-45 mph zone. They say in-towners and residents they allow 10 over before pulling you over.

I agree with the poster whos said that in residential areas the limit is the law.

Seriously though. If you come to L.A. going the limit on the freeway will get you run over or shot. Go with the flow of traffic (about 70 IMO).

Room temperature take - it's better to keep pace with traffic than it is to maintain the speed limit. If you're going 70 and the SL is 75, you're going to be bowled over in the south because everyone else is going 85.

I do what's best for me and that's obeying the speed limit. All this hogwash about "flow of traffic" won't hold up in court if you get a speeding ticket. Sorry, but a surprise $200 ticket (along with whatever bullshit the cop will inevitably trump up) isn't worth getting somewhere five minutes sooner.

Also, just for my personal situation: I live in a one car household and I'm not currently in charge of the car's title/registration/etc. More than once, I have been driving it just to find out that 1) the registration was expired, 2) the insurance had lapsed, or 3) the registration had been suspended. All of these out of my direct control because the person who was supposed to be in charge of that didn't pay their bills. So, I follow the rule of "only break one law at a time" very strictly and assume that the car is violating some law at all times. I don't speed. I come to a complete stop and look both ways at stop signs. I use my turn signals even in parking lots. I damn sure don't touch my phone while I'm driving. Not worth it.

The cops here give a 5 mph cushion. Anything higher and they'll pull you over. So I usually hover at 69 mph in a 65 mph zone lol.

But yeah, plenty of people in LA don't care about that at all. I've had people blow by me that were clearly going 25+ over the limit.

I usually go by the nine youre fine, ten youre mine rule a lot of cops say.

Only time Ive ever been ticketed was when I was going 40 mph in a long 25 mph construction zone on a Saturday with nobody working there (the road is normally 45 mph)

So, Ill slow roll a construction zone now unless someone is rabbiting in front of me (driving faster so theyll catch any cop ahead of us)

Depends on the location.

Going 20 mph in a parking lot where the limit is 15 is highly dangerous.

Going 60 in a 55 will have you getting left behind by the other drivers.

I consider about 20% over the limit to be acceptable. By that logic, 5mph over is fine if the speed limit is 25mph or higher.

(Although "20%" is a bit of a guesstimate in the first place. In practice (and this is in km/h) - I'll usually go 5-10 over if the speed limit is over 30, and 10-20 over if the speed limit is over 80.)

If it isnt a residential area, speed limits were set to save gas, which apparently doesnt really work since no one follows them. Driving slow is more dangerous than driving fast, so follow the flow of traffic and if everyone else is going 5 above, I do the same.
