He's probably falsely equating white indentured servants with slaves because black Africans were also originally indentured servants. Slavery as most people think of it in America developed out of the indentured servitude system.

If you're talking purely about the history of all slavery in human history, fair enough.

However, for the Transatlantic slave trade, it's a really dodgy position to take. I mean, you could maybe argue that the primary motivation in the early stages were profit and using African slaves was a pragmatic way to increase profit. However, one of the reasons that was effective was because they were much easier to dehumanise on account of looking different from white people and at that point it very clearly becomes a race issue.
