Many people believe Bowser's Fury is a proof of concept for something bigger, but I think it's just an idea that didn't translate well for a full blown Mario title so they tacked it on a port to sell copies.

Its 50/50 with Nintendo. They do a lot of concepts like this that never get fully fleshed out

leaning towards this. also, that bowser gimmick wouldn't really work throughout a game. although i did enjoy it for a bit. they could expand on some of the concepts in the game, but that doesn't feel like nintendo

I don't think people are referring to the giant Bowser part of the concept. They are referring to the open world-esque design of the levels, where every Mario level is organically built into the world, with more world access opening up as you get stars/shines/sprites/moons. No hub world, no map, no level select screen. That can work really well if done right.

It's basically if Mario Odyssey and 3D World had a baby.

what i am saying is that nintendo doesn't want to just make that open world game, and will find something unique to add to the gameplay, such as bowser interruptions, in order for them to fully flesh out that style of a game.

I'm almost positive they will head more into an open world direction with next 3D Mario that will be on Switch 2.
