Knowing something that other people don't is generally an indicator of being "smart".

Therefore, they think they're smart.

I'd straight up call them stupid if I were in one of my regular vindictive/petty moods, but if I'm feeling more neutral like I am right now, then I think it's more fair to say that even smart people can and often do make mistakes.

Of course, willful ignorance is also intrinsic to a lot of these people, in which case, yeah you're straight up moronic in every sense of the word.

Isn't it better to just not assume someone's motives either way? We're often quite far off the mark whenever we do.

I literally had to put a /s tag on r/TropicalWeather the other day just for drawing attention to the fact that the average pleb complains about how the National Hurricane Center is purposefully inflating tropical storm and hurricane numbers with the intention of validating climate change.

What actually happened was that there was a disturbance off Atlantic Canada that was attempting to develop, which is why I made the comment. These folks appear to believe that for some reason, a tropical storm over the open Atlantic only affecting maritime shipping lanes for a day or two before dissipating shouldn't get christened a name because of...arbitrary reasons.

This sort of thing is so very common among the meteorology community that I was, again, simply astonished that these guys actually needed a bonafide /s tag when I made that post when that disturbance got its own thread on said sub.

What's interesting is that I'm autistic and a lot of people aren't; if anything, you'd think I'd be less likely to detect sarcasm than them, as opposed to the other way around.

i honeslty think autistic people would be able to detect sarcasm better in text than normal people do. kinda inverse relationship where the autist can pick up cues when it's not inperson

I certainly communicate better online, and generally avoid IRL social interaction.

I feel like it stems from past distrust of some kind of institution. Medical institution, academic, governmental, etc. Once you've had a bad experience, it's just easier to be convinced that something is off about that institution.
