The number of people who have died in the extreme flooding in Germany has risen to 156, authorities say. Koblenz police said on Sunday that another 12 bodies had been found in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate overnight, bringing the number of fatalities there to 110.

Officials in the neighboring state of North Rhine-Westphalia reported 45 deaths by late Saturday evening. At least one person is now known to have died in floods in the Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land close to the border with Austria and the city of Salzburg.

That article doesnt give much info on the cause, just says because of the rains.

This sounds unusual as hell though, or is heavy flooding common in those areas?

RIP to those lost.

it literally just rained non stop and really hard for a week or so. Really crazy shit.

actually it was really only one or two days were it was unusually bad

Cologne police said in a statement on Sunday that they had managed to reach 700 people who had been declared missing. There are now just 150 people who they have not yet been able to get hold of in the regions around Cologne and Bonn.

This is absolutely crazy.

Seems that way.
Europe just isn't used to this shit, in contrast to the Great Plains over in North America.

I don't have a source so I'm not sure how true this is, but this is considered a 1 in 25,000 year event

Ya, I would think so...

So The Rhine is overflowing, and just about everything else?

Ya, this seems very inland.
I trust Germany to be able to handle this.
But it does really suck.

And when you say a once-in 25,000 year event I think of the Glaciers melting.
As for rainfall, that is just amazing. ((It's not Glacial level of runoff))

I really need to check this out more closely.

I hope you haven't been impacted too much.

That is good.

But it also explains why Belgium has been dragged into this.

I actually had a flooding dream the other day...well before I knew about this. ~True story.

This really sucks.
Rain, absent of the ocean and tides...etc...is an amazing outcome to this. Inland.

For what it's worth, I'm glad you're safe.
~It's one less thing to think about...your personal safety.

That is a stunning amount of rain.
Mother Nature doesn't give a fuck about us.

There is several damns in my region that are placed to hold back water, and create energy, that were originally realized to stop flooding way downstate.
There is a CEman whose father works at one of the energy plants.

But ya, Nature will always take its course.

just got back from day 2 of making supply runs there from a local company that is gathering supplies to the local towns and cities.

Catastrophe doesn't even begin to describe it...more like apocalypse...some of those towns really look like war zones....Bundeswehr, Police, Firefighter, Red Cross convoys everywhere, cranes, all sorts of heavy machinery, helicopters flying around with supplies, looking for people, airlifting them out, cars mangled into buildings, pavement ripped off of the streets, collapsed bridges, railroad tracks that looked more like rollercoasters, huge piles of rubble line the streets, busted trees everywhere....complete chaos occasionally.

Then you have the little moments that really get you, 80 year olds by themselves bringing wheelbarrows full of mud out of their homes, police not letting you into towns because search dogs are looking for bodies, or because helicopters are landing...I talked to a soldier with an ISAF shirt on today and he said he had been all over the middle east and it wasn't as bad as some of the shit he saw the last few days. There are still some towns where only the helicopters can get to...almost a week after the flooding.

cleared out a house today. The entire living room was full to the ceiling with trees, mud, rubble of all sorts. Two houses down the road there was a body in the basement.

Insane stuff
