Sorry, I meant that part of the suspense in Alien is how mysterious the alien is. It's so prevalent in pop culture that nothing it does is a surprise.

This is true.

A movie built around horror/suspense and mystery definitely loses something when it hits a certain threshold of pop cultural osmosis.

One is sci fi horror, the other is sci fi action. Depends on what you like. People are entertained by action films, yes. Aliens is definitely a popcorn flick.

Guess it depends on what you like

Some people prefer McDonalds to a steak dinner

Aliens had more screaming and gunfire and explosions and one liners

Alien has better Atmosphere, characters , tone, suspense, sets, acting and metaphors

I'm big into the atmosphere over action group

There's tons of action in Man of Steel and it's a shitty movie

I rewatched both Alien and Aliens last week. And then I watched the other four films in the series for the first time after those.

My opinion when I was younger and had watched the first two was that Alien was good but still somewhat disappointing considering the vast amount of hype it gets. I thought Aliens was fantastic though. After the rewatches, I definitely appreciate both films more. Aliens is without a doubt my favorite in the series though.

The other four films weren't terrible but all of them have some issues that bothered me at least a little bit.

Alien and Aliens are two fantastic movies.

The first does horror better, the second is more exciting.

A shame they never followed it up with a third movie, but with how good the first two were, maybe that's for the best. Hard to top damn near perfection.

I enjoyed Resurrection at first despite it being probably the dumbest movie in the series. But my opinion of it has soured quite a bit since watching it. I think Alien 3 is the one I disliked the most initially but even that is much truer to the series than Resurrection was.

What's iconic is the way it ruined the ending to Aliens. I will never forgive Alien 3 no matter how good the rest of the movie is, for that reason.

Alien is one of the greatest psychological horror movies of all time.

Aliens takes over half of the film for the team to land on the fucking planet and encounter aliens, of which aren't even terrifying anymore

Honestly, the most shocking thing to me about Aliens is that it was received well at all. It is a blatantly terrible film, and does not belong anywhere near Alien, The Thing, The Shining, The Conjuring, The Evil Dead 1, The Witch, etc.
I don't really see how Aliens can be compared to any of those except for Alien, and that's simply by virtue of being its sequel. Aliens clearly has a vastly different tone than Alien, and there's nothing wrong with disliking that of course.

I do think saying it takes half the film for them to land sounds like quite an exaggeration though. I don't remember the original edition of the film much at this point, but I thought the Special Edition was very well-paced.

Thats because they're two very different kinds of movies with very different tones, despite having the same titular antagonist.

Alien is very much a bleak, suspenseful horror movie, and almost nothing is played for laughs at any point.

Aliens is a sci-fi action adventure that lets a fair amount of humor in.

I'm actually use to the undermining of Aliens so much that it use to get under my skin. Now it's old hat.

But still, I swear the people who box-in Aliens as just some mindless action movie with one-liners were either not paying attention or only saw it once, chopped up on cable TV like AMC or TNT.

I mean, this movie has multiple themes coming out of every orifice of it that were not really that hard to pick up on.

1st - It expands on the corporatism and greed of Weyland-Yutani, and how companies will sacrifice human capital for profitability via the Burke character (Paul Reiser). He went so far as to not warn the colonists about the Xenomorph that they knew about prior to settlement on that planet, and even to the point where he was going to kill all of the soldiers who survived and cause Newt and Ripley to be implanted with xeno-embryos while preserved in Cryosleep. Male greed is one of the reasons why the situations occur, whether it was schemes from Burke, or Newt's father who competed for discoveries on an uncharted planet, but foolishly got himself infected by a face-hugger, broke quarantine protocols and brought it back to the compound's community.

2nd - It takes the weak and helpless female characterization of the Lambert and Ripley from the first movie and exhibits more of a tough female presence with a more rough-around-the-edges Ripley and the Vasquez character that was not really prevalent in film during that era. They even exhibit it moments in the film, such as Ripley taking leadership of the billy badass space marines, and Vasquez sacrificing herself to save her remaining squad.

3rd - The movie is also about resolving trauma by confronting it head-on. Ripley is besieged by nightmares of the 1st movie's events, and initially rejects Burke's offer to go to LV-426. She realizes the only way to stop her nightmares and unresolved trauma is to not hide, but confront the problem head-on and obtain closure.

4th - The movie is very hubris-focused, as the Space Marines who reduce the situation to "another bug hunt" get their "asses kicked, pal." It shows all their posturing, their muscles, their weaponry and tech, and their machismo and reduces it down to nothing. It's not a coincidence that the only soldier who survived was the one who didn't underestimate his enemy (Hicks) and was willing to be the first one in to help or make the tough decisions (when he saves Ripley and Newt from the facehugger, and has to make the difficult decision to leave the rest of the team behind).

5th - Probably the most important theme is the movie is about motherhood. This is most telling in the nest scene with Ripley encountering the queen. Ripley knows this place is about to go nuclear and dissolve whatever is left of the Xenomorphs. She takes Newt but the Queen won't let her leave. Not until Ripley torches a few eggs to the Queen's dismay. The Queen relents, and let's Ripley walk out. All Ripley had to do was leave with the satisfaction of knowing that her enemy was toast. But she didn't do that...she starts to unload on the nest with fire, rounds, and grenades because she WANTED the Queen Mother to feel what she felt, which was the loss of opportunity to be a Mom since the first movie caused Ripley to get lost in cryosleep & by the time she returned to Earth, her daughter had already lived a full life without her and died. That and Ripley risking live and limb to save Newt, which was her 2nd chance at motherhood.

But no, it's just a dumb action movie with bullets and one-liners. JenniferLawrenceOK.gif.

Aliens basically established most of the things we come to associate with the mythology.

Aliens also has Paul Reiser, Newt, the Power-Lifter, and crybaby strongman Ripley.....

..... none of which are good things, except maaaaaybe the initial scenes with Newt.

Aliens does have the Space Marines, yes, and a lot of Terminator DNA, and it really isnt a bad movie. Its cliche though. Its family-friendly. Characters have plot armor. It basically flipped the original on its head & went from sci-fi to fantasy. Thats what a lot of people wanted too. Its a bonafide classic. However, it lacks the maturity & gravity which made the original what it is & the DNA of Aliens in particular has made it extremely difficult to even make a coherent follow-up partially because what fans expect & partially because the studio knows how they can treat Alien & have people eat it up as a popcorn flick to sell tickets with strong petite women & actors in cheap costumes & having thematically relevant sub-plots to whatever else is going on in Hollywood at the time.

It doesnt help that the fanbase didnt get Prometheus & Covenant

and they prefer comics & video games about the mating habits of the Yautja

Theyre all good movies, but Ive always said that Alien, Prometheus, and Alien Covenant are the Crown Jewels of the series. Aliens and Alien 3 were awesome, but they just played off of Aliens success without really doing anything. Prometheus and AC really explained things and set the table for the rest of the series.

Its too bad we wont be getting the other two prequels to bridge the gap between Covenant and the original Alien. I know the prequels have gotten a mixed reaction but I actually enjoyed them for the most part
