I just worry that each progressive title will see diminished sales and they will start rushing everything to complete it in 3. Trying to do a long form story based series like this and gain in sales in the sequels is basically impossible. I know Xenosaga sold less on each iteration, I haven't seen how cold steels sales look but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same trend. I'm worried square enix isn't ready for that and will start to can the project when part 2s sales don't match up to the first

part 2 even if it lags is still gonna sell more than every square game ever Except VII (original) VIII, X, XV, KH, and KH III.

There is zero chance that it what causes them to rush.

The alternative is pulling a Shenmue 3 and telling the next part of a story that will never finish.

Xenosaga also doesn't have the lustre of "Final Fantasy VII" attached to it.

No doubt that Part 2's sales will have a dropoff from Part 1 but it'll still be a massive hit. Though I also see the remake series being 5 games minimum so I could see the concern if Part 2's not sufficiently meeting expectations that they scale it down to 4.

The big question remains whether they continue the "fleshed out environments" they did with Midgar or if they keep area scopes smaller/insert less filler to get people moving along briskly. Which I imagine is also why they haven't pre-committed to the number of games in the remake (or similarly, the shadow of Xenosaga looms large)

AAA game sales are very different now, especially RPGs. You don't sell the 1st game, then the 2nd, etc, you sell the whole franchise at once. In 20 years they will still be selling FF7, and that's ok, because there's billions of people in the world who could be brought in to the series. Even in the future, they will start with FF7R1, then maybe finish that series, then maybe try to PS1 FF7, then if they are really hooked, branch into the other FFs. Skyrim, TLOU, etc have the same business model. The brand is commoditized, like Coca Cola.

So as long as the R sequels successfully grab gamer mind share (and they will), it will be profitable to keep making them.
