Back then they had people physically controlling elevators. In this situation it was a white operator. He stumbled inside and bumped into the woman. She freaked out and people saw a black man running out of the elevator Rumors spread and people whipped up a mob to attack the black side of town. No matter how prosperous they were the existence of black townships and neighborhoods during that time hung on the whim of white supremacists who would burn them down and massacre the people (virtually always started on a rumor or a lie). The insurrection of Wilmington was particularly crazy, that town has never recovered to the level of prosperity it had prior to the coup. The Elaine, Arkansas massacre is another big one that doesn't get attention. These are just some of the bigger ones, notice that a lot of these occurred during Reconstruction Era or after WW1, when black folks gained rights and after black soldiers returned home from war expecting better treatment.
