The ironic thing is that a few years earlier

Sony: Yo Sega fam we wanna make a console with you guys
Sega: Fuck you

Then Sony made Playstation and the rest was history. #SonyDaGOATfam

PS2 killed the Dreamcast and Gameboy killed the Gamegear

Sega spent half the 90s getting spanked like a girl in a BDSM hentai

Or how aboutt hat time Nintendo and SOny teamed up to make a CD console?

Nintendo: Hey, Sony, let's work together to make a CD console!
Sony: Sounds like a great idea! Let's do it!
*a while later*
Nintendo: Okay, we did it! Now to announce this to the world!
Sony: Yes! I'm most excited!
Nintendo: Alright, world, Nintendo, that being us, is producing a CD-based console in collaboration with Philips!
Sony: Wait, what?
Nintendo: Sorry, but not sorry, Sony, but I don't like you. Toodles!

sure the PS1 blew it out of the water but Saturn still had its gems.

Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop 2 and Nights Into Dreams made it worth it to me!

Sega's Japanese branch, namely bitch-ass Hayao Nakayama, just ran the company into the ground with stupid decisions. From turning down the partnership with Sony, to demanding that the Saturn's hardware be designed around 2D instead of 3D, to demanding that the 32X to be made at all, to the Saturn's surprise launch, this guy was a fucking idiot.

Eh, more accurate to say Sony flipped off Nintendo after reviewing the agreement and seeing how asinine it was to Sony.

I had a saturn actually. I never met another person who did. I ended up selling it a year or 2 later to get money for a ps1. Saturn had some decent games though. I remember something called Clockwork Knight that was kinda cool.

I had one. It had a few really cool games, but they were spread out like they were trying to be Nintendo. Dragon Force and Guardian Heroes in particular were some kick ass games that had some cool ideas that I haven't seen much of even now.

Wasn't it that the Nintendo boss didn't like that they had to share software sales with Sony so they pulled back last minute?

The Saturn was excellent at 2D games, but that didn't really matter, because 3D was all the rage at the time. The system's 3D capabilities were mainly added as an afterthought after Sega learned of the Playstation's capabilities. As a result, the system's hardware just became too complex and expensive. Sega should have realized 3D was the future and designed the system around it from the getgo.

Sony knew, so why wouldn't Sega? And Nintendo knew as well; the N64 was primarily 3D. The thing is with Nintendo is that they spent a longer time developing the N64, which is why it was released more than a year after the Saturn and Playstation. Sega should have taken a longer time to develop the Saturn as well and focused on keeping the Genesis alive for the time-being like how Nintendo was keeping the Super Nintendo alive. They were just too eager to get the jump on Sony.

playstation spanked everything. 100 million units shipped, champ.

also, its insane how few fanboys Sega has. There isnt even a Wikipedia article on best-selling Saturn games. And the one for Genesis games looks off. If this thread gets 100 replies, like 4 of them will be by people who played panzer dragoon saga.

I read an article once in a gaming magazine that went into detail how the PSX was much easier to code games for, and Sony even went out of their way to help newer developers make games for it. Saturn on the other hand was difficult and not intuitive at all, and Sega didn't do much to help third party developers. This lead to a huge library advantage for the PSX.

They really should have just teamed up with Sony to make their next console. But if they couldn't do that, then they should have just teamed up with Silicon Graphics. The console would have been too expensive to come out at the same time as the Playstation, but that would have been for the best, as they could then focus more on keeping the Genesis alive; it was obvious that the 16-bit era was still far from over. So, while the Playstation would come out in 1994/5, Sega's console with Silicon would come out in 1996 at a respectable price.

Sega's Japanese branch insisted on moving on from the Genesis and refused to let Sony get a headstart, so they turned down Silicon, which later teamed up with Nintendo on the Nintendo 64. Not only was Sega too stupid to team up with Sony in the beginning, but they were too eager to get the jump on them, which resulted in the Saturn being a poorly designed, poorly marketed mess.

I've never played a Saturn and even as a collector of multiple systems, it has zero appeal to me and the controller is ugly (the disc shaped one).
