for him to use.

Obviously the controls are basically the same for every character, but who do you think would be simplest to wrap his head around?

I was thinking maybe DK because all his attacks are pretty clear, or Meta Knight because of the recovery ability he has. He does have memories of playing Kirby on NES or SNES, he says.

Yeah, but I'm thinking fludd and the cape might be a little trickier to grasp than a lot of other special attacks

Is said friend going to be "getting into" Smash? Even on a pretty casual level? Lucina for sure.

Are you just playing some games, probably items on, maybe FFAs, just playing? I think Simon or Richter would be good choice

Captain Falcon then. Very straighforward.

Or some punchy guy like Ryu

Also Pac Man is super fucking fun on a FFA when you're the worst player but still good enough to win if you make it to the last two

Wrong. Kirby is. 6 jumps so hard to self destruct, simple moveset, up special is very easy to hit with.

I think Link is probably a safe bet. Mario has gotten changed quite a bit since the GC days when they decided to add Fludd, though I might be wrong in thinking that Dr. Mario is the older style of Mario.

Another option I found is Little Mac. Very easy to play and master, though he does suffer a bit since his jump is a bit skewed.

Kirby's a super easy character to get into. Multiple jumps, easy moves to learn.

Kirby and Mario are good choices but I'd lean more towards Mario because going from five jumps to two might be a tough habit to break

Any of the Star Fox characters are good for new players to learn the fundamentals.

Especially Fox and Wolf. Falco is probably a little harder because of his wonky jump and more focus on his aerial game. You have to be able to short hop with him which is hard for new players.

But all 3 of them have good aerials, Smash attacks (especially Wolf), and are decently fast and have projectiles.

Jigglypuff

I'd suggest this later on, because she does help teach about punishing and spacing. But I think she'd be tough for a new player or someone trying to learn fundamentals because her grounded attacks are awful. You have to play her way differently than most characters.

Marth's tipper is a more advanced technique. Lucina has consistent damage across all parts of the sword i think

Marth has a tipper effect where his attacks are strongest when hit with the tip of the sword, but weaker when hit with the base. Lucina's sword is balanced throughout and has no tipper mechanic in play, so you don't have to worry as much about spacing for your attacks.
