Let's say it takes X amount of time of normal gameplay to achieve what can be done instantly by throwing money at it. During that time the paying player will have had an advantage, and racked up more wins than the F2P player. Those wins will usually reward the player even more; with exp points, with items and ingame currencies that aren't buyable, or by unlocking higher tiers faster that give even more rewards, etc. Even if a F2P catches up after X time to where the paying player started, there will still be a lead that's not easily overcome. Secondly, these sort of games get updated over time with stronger characters and items to unlock, making sure the F2P's grind is never over. Whenever they get close to catching up, the finish line just keeps extending.
