This. The thing that's most aggravating about DKC3 is how there are barely any normal platforming levels. Damn near every level has some elaborate gimmick that makes the level feel like a chose to play. The other two games did not take the gimmicks anywhere near to the extreme that that one did.

I played through this level not too long ago on SNES Online and I had to use save states to beat it. That last portion is just brutal.

Of course, I beat it as a kid years ago, back when I didn't have save states, but this time...

I find that if I have a hard time with a stage I just put it down for a week and come back. Usually when I do that I beat it within 2-3 attempts.

Agreed, on top of its overall lighter tone and having to deal with Kiddy Kong.

Not a bad game, but arguably the weakest of the SNES trilogy.

Mod Logic, I agree that Rocket Barrel Race is a hardcore pain in the ass. Someone said they got through it by flipping thr controller upside down. Rare are a buncha sadists sometimes.

it doesn't necessarily matter if dkc2 had more 'gimmick' levels (however we're defining that term) if the impression is still that dkc3 had too many.

in terms of what took a step back i'm too far-removed from a playthrough of either or a watchthrough but i do remember stages in 3 seeming to meander. like it doesn't really point you the right way and you just found it. it reminded me of playing an early patch of dragon quest 5 actually. i ended up getting really lost because the translation seemed to skip to an area well ahead of where i was.

Counted the levels with gimmicks between 2 and 3. 3 has one more gimmicky level then 2. Which is not way more. And Rare has always liked gimmicky levels, even before DKC was a thing. Some are fun, some are a nightmare to get through.

Yeah, that's basically it.

It's like someone arguing that Fi in the original Skyward Sword wasn't that bad because Midna technically had more interruptions to gameplay, when it's really that it just feels like Fi interrupts way more because of how the game was designed.

so the fact that they changed the bees was a huge early distraction for me. the buzzsaws somehow look less damaging.

the way the nature of the world feels off from a dkc world is hard to explain. i refuse to say that it's just not cohesive enough with 1 and 2.

lol, i missed this.

i'm actually more comfortable playing with it upside-down than i am rightside-up. what i looked up said this was more common among lefties but i'm sort of weird mixed-handed anyway.

and also i mean any game, not just this. just the snes controller in general. nes controller too.

i remember the lightning stage was quite challenging and the swimming stage with backwards control was annoying.

And holy shit do I agree with this. The first game was nearly all platforming, the second had an okay level of gimmickery, but the third took it too far. (Interestingly, I'd also say exactly the same thing about the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy too.)

Yes, I do see everyone saying "ackshually there's only one more than DKC2!", I'm going to guess there's definitely a factor of what exactly one considers a "gimmick" here, but ultimately - what I can say for sure, is that in DKC2, it didn't feel like the gimmicks were being overdone. Maybe they were less intrusive, maybe DKC2 spread them out better and DKC3 clumped them together too much, dunno. But as someone who played through the series in order, once, DKC3 felt hugely more reliant on gimmicks than DKC2, whatever the reasoning for that may be.

It's even worse on the GBA version. First half of the level is much harder and you get no checkpoint barrel iirc. Makes it a contender for hardest level in the series.

The reversed controls swimming level was worse for me. But I don't think anything in DKC3 is as hard as Animal Antics in DKC2. I'd probably put Screech's Sprint up there too.
