That depends.

Why dont you just start with the original or 2 for PS1 if you can? Thats how most fans of the series experienced it.

If you start with 4, you will get the wrong impression with the series and be confused why most of the other games are so different.

@unnamedsoldier

You can start with RE4, I did, and loved it.

Also 7 is a great follow up or RE2make

I started from the beginning, but 4 was the first one I really fell in love with. I like the others, especially 2. But 4 was just way more my speed. You sound like you're leaning towards the same speed.

Just keep in mind that if you plan on going to 5-6, throw away the idea of them being horror games. You gotta accept they're straight up action games or you won't enjoy them. You'll just run around for the rest of time with a bad take about how their controls aren't good or some other nonsense easily proven wrong to try to not appear bias. There's also fair criticisms, but I don't care about those :3.

TC, I really got into RE with RE4, so I'd wholly recommend that. Although, if you want something more modern, you can't go wrong with RE2 and RE3's remakes. If you are fine going first person, RE7 and RE8 are fantastic choices.

I'd also recommend Resident Evil Revelations 2 some time after you finish RE2's remake.

If you are fine with the classic tank controls, RE1's remake and RE0 are good choices.

If you want to kick back and enjoy some mindless co-op action(make sure it is co-op, trust me), I'd recommend RE5 and RE6. RE6 can be played solo and still be fun, it's a very good action game(shit RE game), but RE5 with co-op is 100% needed.

I wouldn't recommend the older games if you think they are dated. They are. And I'm not a fan of them anymore myself.

generally speaking...
REmake 1 is the best representation of the classic design. if you want more atmosphere, puzzles, item management and in general a lot more systems within the design to keep track of (kinda like a more involved old school adventure game). 4 is where the action took center stage and for the most part is the one that excels the best in it while also still keeping certain aspects of the older ones though putting them more on the back burner in comparison. 7 does a mixture of both while doin gits own thing like combining the first person view with a more "modern" horror take. REmake 2 is kinda similar in that regard as far as combining old aspects with modern controls while pulling them off (imo) better than 7, but REmake 2 isnt as self contained story wise as 7 is so maybe not as quite as noob friendly.

starting at one of those 3 points tends to be ideal depending on what you want more of. they tend to be self conatined enough and expanding on the next games in the series (like 8 playing off of 7 more, REmake 2 and 3 off of REmake 1, 5 and 6 off of 4 ect. rather than having any huge connections to much older titles in the series) that you also dont need to know too much of whats come before.

Started with Outbreak, went to 5, then Revelations (or whatever the ship one was), then 7

from there I went 4, RE:2 REMAKE, 8, RE, RE:0

yeahhhhhh, you can pretty much have fun with any of them imo

You'd be bored to tears if you start with 4

Start with RE2make or RE7.

Then go back if you liked them

Just start with Revelations 2 and then do the remake for 2 and 3, followed by 8 if you like those.

This is the current direction the series is going in, so its probably the best to start with. I feel like 7 is too slow and clunky compared to these others to really fit in. But it is much more classic horror oriented if you want to try it.

Same here. Xbox is having their summer sale. I could pick up 1-7 for under $70. Not including zero, code veronica or revelations. Been thinking about getting them.

Nah. I started with 4.

Remake 1 is a little aged with fixed camera angles. A lot of people like it but my opinion is that its archaic and a lot less fun than the new camera angles. Like I get people like classic resident evil camera angles, but the controls and combat is ass

REMAKE 2 is fantastic. 3rd person shooter controls but keeps the resident evil puzzle map gameplay.

remake 3 is OK but still pretty fun. A lot more linear than 2 but essentially the same mechanics.

4 is easily one of the best RE in the series

I personally think starting with Remake 2 is a great start. Id give remake 1 a shot, but if you dont like the old school gameplay its easy to just read a plot synopsis
