My laptop's video card just went kaput (no display, all backlight, plugging into HDMI does nada) and it seems to recognize a blind login from the onboard lights
While waiting for the vendor to ready the shipping info, could I buy an external graphics adapter (one of those USB to HDMI ones) and use that to work for a little bit using an external monitor?

What laptop do you have? The actual model is needed.
Your HDMI port might be connected to the motherboard meaning your idea won't work

I won't be using the motherboard HDMI port, just the one on the USB -> HDMI adapter

You don't understand.
Laptops have either an inbuilt GPU or else a seperate GPU.
If you have a laptop without a seperate GPU then using a USB to vga won't work

It's an NVIDIA card soldered onto the motherboard. Guess that's a no-go. Thanks for the input.

So I bought a couple USB - HDMI adapters (different brands) hoping they'd auto install and work but they didn't.
I then pulled out the CMOS battery and put it back in. On the next boot the display suddenly sprang back to life saying the CMOS was reset. Successfully loaded into Windows and the NVIDIA Control Panel is gone and Windows auto-installed Intel Graphics whatever. There is a caution sign by the NVIDIA card in Device Manager
Think my NVIDIA card is dead?
