I played Blue Lions for my first playthrough way back when it first released (Hard/Classic). Haven't touched the game since then.

I want to play it again, this time for Golden Deer. Should I play the DLC first, then jump into Golden Deer? Or do Golden Deer first since it's been so long that I only really remember the main story beats (more or less)? I did try the first fight of the DLC on Hard mode and lost lol.

And if I just do Golden Deer first, should I do NG+ or do a fresh playthrough? I looked into it a little and getting rid of some of the tedium of the monastery sounds nice, but I also don't want to be OP too early.

Also I think I'm just going to do Hard/Casual because who the hell has time for Classic mode these days. The game almost feels designed like it doesn't want you to play Classic anyway, and it's just there as a legacy option because of the way FE used to be.

Pick Edelgard team and make her Empress and then side with her and conquer everything.

I want to save Edelgard for last (well, "last") since finishing with Golden Deer feels like it would be a little underwhelming

Here's how I did it.

Golden Deer (1st) - Standard playthrough.
Blue Lions (2nd) - More experimentation with classes and units.
Black Eagles (3rd) - DLC run with DLC classes and units.

Normal/Casual for 1st, Hard/Casual for 2nd and 3rd.

Do the DLC first, since after you finish it the characters from the DLC can be recruited in any future playthrough.

I just did the DLC on normal mode. The DLC is much harder than the main story. I'd say normal DLC is equivalent to hard main story. IMHO.

Does the DLC require me to remember details of the main game's plot? I barely remembered which students were in which house and have no clue when the DLC is situated in the game story (except sometime before the timeskip obv).

DLC first, then NG+. Not everything carries over (money, levels for example) and most of what does carry over you can decide at any time in the monastery what you want. So if you want to start at professor rank A+ but start your skills over at E you can do that if you have the renown. The things that outright carry over are any unlocks from the statues, your battalions, and the endgame marketplace items (though you still have to unlock the extra merchant shops again).

You do not need to remember the main plot for the DLC, it's not designed to fit in any specific spot other than pre-timeskip.

Its sometime after chapter 4. It takes place in either month 8 or 9. But you are right it can't be narrowed down to an exact time frame. Also the events of the DLC are not "canon" to the main plot. Its more of a "what if"
