https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/02/white-house-defends-its-decision-not-to-extend-the-eviction-moratorium.html

A top White House aide defended President Joe Bidens decision not to extend the federal Covid-19 eviction moratorium on Monday, two days after nearly a yearlong nationwide halt on rental evictions expired. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court declared on June 29 that the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] could not grant such an extension without clear and specific congressional authorization, said economist Gene Sperling, who leads the White House effort to distribute Covid relief funds. That authorization has not been granted, he said, and as a result the CDC director and her team have been unable to find legal authority to extend the moratorium. Sperling then outlined new measures Biden had authorized, which largely consisted of directing agencies to keep trying to prevent evictions. The White Houses argument that it lacks the legal authority to extend the eviction ban has not gone over well with the progressive wing of the Democratic party, which has been pressuring both Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for weeks to extend the moratorium by any means necessary.

This court order came down on the White House a month ago, and the White House waited until the day before the House adjourned to release a statement asking Congress to extend the moratorium, progressive Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, N.Y. said Sunday on CNN. President Biden would have strongly supported a decision by the CDC to further extend this eviction moratorium, the White House said in a statement last Thursday. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has made clear that this option is no longer available. Biden then called on Congress to extend the eviction moratorium to protect such vulnerable renters and their families without delay. Bidens statement caught some Democrats by surprise, and with the House scheduled to adjourn for almost two months of recess the following day, party leaders scrambled to determine what steps they could take. But it quickly became clear that Pelosi lacked the votes within her own caucus to extend the ban. This was in part because Democratic House members knew that even if they voted to pass an extension, it would be DOA in the Senate.

Perhaps he shouldn't have called on them to do it right before a recess. Biden either did this as a calculated political maneuver where he didn't actually want this to pass so he popped it in a way that made it look like he cared and Congress didn't, OR he's senile and has no idea what he just did.

It says that the Biden admin knew only Congress could a month ago, then waited until the day before the recess began to request an extension. They had an entire month and waited on purpose. "Oh, Congress didn't do it, we're innocent" one will say while the other goes "we didn't have time to" and just. You know. Democrats doing their best to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Agrees. Lots of blame to go around but...

Congressional GOP>>>>>>Congressional dems>Biden in who deserves blame.

Biden definitely doesn't have the power to do this via simple executive order.

this was not secret information, it was a public ruling. congress is supposed to be full up of politicians that actually understand how the fucking government works and should have been able to understand that a ruling from the supreme court saying the white house cant extend a ban means THE WHITE HOUSE CANT EXTEND A BAN!

this shit isn't rocket science, the legislators saying otherwise are just jackasses trying to pass the buck.

Oh so now we want biden to be as power hungry as Trump?

We desperately needed a president who respected the rules of the system, glad we got one

After years of Trump doing everything he could to be a dictator, it is a relief to see Biden respect the rule of law even when its inconvenient

People already have a lot less to lose up to this point. I guess creating a situation where people have absolutley nothing left to lose is exactly what this country needs during a global pandemic. Surely that will make things better.

Also it seems like someone didn't get the memo on who to blame

You literally don't have to pay back rent if you were financially impacted by the pandemic thanks to the rescue plan. And the US spent so much more money on covid aid than any other country that poverty declined by 42% and disposable income increased. In a pandemic!

let me know when the Biden administration defends incentivizing tens of thousands of illegal southern border crossings by potentially COVID infected people, while pretending to be concerned over COVID spread or that they believe it is half as dangerous as they say. All while keeping travel restrictions in place from many other parts of the world including fucking Canada. Of course it was xenophobic when the last guy did that. Not good ol Joe though

Basically none of that has actually gotten to people, though
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/07/21/rental-relief-cdc-eviction-moratorium/
But housing experts caution there is a long way to go. Only about $3 billion was spent on rent, utilities and arrears through June just a fraction of the $46 billion, in total, Congress appropriated for emergency rental aid. The vast majority of the money has not been spent while states and cities struggle to prop up programs that get money out the door.
