Apple intends to install software on American iPhones to scan for child abuse imagery, according to people briefed on its plans, raising alarm among security researchers who warn that it could open the door to surveillance of millions of peoples personal devices.

Apple detailed its proposed system known as neuralMatch to some US academics earlier this week, according to two security researchers briefed on the virtual meeting. The plans could be publicised more widely as soon as this week, they said.

The automated system would proactively alert a team of human reviewers if it believes illegal imagery is detected, who would then contact law enforcement if the material can be verified. The scheme will initially roll out only in the US.

The proposals are Apples attempt to find a compromise between its own promise to protect customers privacy and ongoing demands from governments, law enforcement agencies and child safety campaigners for more assistance in criminal investigations, including terrorism and child pornography.

The tension between tech companies such as Apple and Facebook, which have defended their increasing use of encryption in their products and services, and law enforcement has only intensified since the iPhone maker went to court with the FBI in 2016 over access to a terror suspects iPhone following a shooting in San Bernardino, California.

Fuck child predators but uhhh...them scanning every photo we take has major abuse potential from both Apple and government. If the cooperation between Apple and law enforcement is too close it could also be struck down as an illegal search rendering it largely pointless.

Also could see a lot of false flags happening from memes, innocent pics of your own kids, Teenagers nude selfies of themselves, anime, software bugs etc.

The only purpose served by making this public ahead of time would be if Apple isn't actually doing this, but Google already has.

This is would be a gross violation of privacy. I'm all for catching child abusers and pedophiles, but this is too much is not it.

These types of "security" measures always end up being abused by the government and the corporation.

Because our justice system is known for its speed, proportionality, protection of the innocent and just compensation for invalid arrest/imprisonment right? As well as officers who respect rights and don't use excessive force?

if there was some way to be 100% positive it would only scan for this and auto delete all other information

The real reason is probably to get even more data to sell to advertisers.

"This person takes a lot of pictures of birds. We can target bird seed and camera ads to them."

Getting the FBI to get off their backs is just a bonus no doubt.

ai scans the pictures/videos with known database in the FBI of child porn images/videos and if a match comes up it gets flagged and a human takes over

I could understand scanning iCloud for that stuff. You agree to that on the terms and service. But scanning device storage is not cool.

If you have an iPhone open your "Photos" app. Go to the Search tab. Look at the categories.

"Animal"
"Dogs"
"Snow"
"Cars"
"Cats"

I literally have a category called "Dinosaurs" of photos I took at the Royal Tyrrell Museum a couple years ago.

What the plan is here is to use this to detect cp and then have that photo sent off and reviewed by someone that isn't you.

This decision is fucking trash and in no way should actually roll out, but technology-wise it's not as big of a step up from what's already there.

This has nothing to do with child abuse. That's their front to make everyone okay with it. They're installing this for something nefarious on their end, who knows what for. Maybe for market analytics, maybe to sell to companies for who knows what, maybe to protect bad people, etc

They already had a case involving a legal age pornstar called Little Lupe that dealt with this. Guy had porn of her and got arrested on child porn charges, the only reason he did not go to jail is she showed proof of age and the case was over.

If they pass this law there will be a fuck ton of cases like that and some innocent people will likely go to jail.

The reason why Apple has been pushing their "privacy" angle lately. They can't get a cut of third party apps selling user data to advertisers, so instead they give you the option to turn off the tracking. "If we don't make money do don't either."
