This is largely true though, however I do enjoy SA1 and 2.

Everything ELSE? Trash.

If you like the 2D games then you should give the Advance and Rush series a try. The DS version of Generation is also great.

And Unleashed is a 3D game I recommend, but I can see why some think Sonic is to fast and that the werewolf stages are boring.

Are Kingdom Hearts III and the Smash appearance going to mean big things for Sora?

I find it a little interesting how his best contest appearances were in the time between the releases of Kingdom Hearts II and 358/2 Days, almost as if this site started turning against Kingdom Hearts when it became clear the series was going to be milked with a million handheld installments before getting to a real Kingdom Hearts III.

I know Kingdom Hearts III didn't do the best in GOTD, but it and the Smash appearance are easily the biggest things Sora has gotten since KH2. He should at least be able to avoid embarrassing himself.

Kingdom Hearts III wasnt particularly well-received on gamefaqs either.

I wouldnt take Sora to further embarrass himself given hed at least have something going for him this time and he could probably avenge that loss to Red but hes never gonna be a near-elite or close to it again.

The initial Smash announcement had a positive effect on Sonic but it didn't last long. I'd expect that's the case for most third party Smash characters.

And yet Snake hasn't really looked back from becoming a mid-tier Noble Niner at worst when before he was clearly in the lower rung.

Snake is the huge exception to the rule. He benefited from being the first. No other character has had a permanent leap the way Snake has.

It seemed to help Mega Man quite a bit in 2013 to be fair too. I suppose that might have been more just slowing a potential decline though.

Still nothing on the next contest? Think this is now the second longest we've gone without a contest announcement, only after 2013 when Draven almost killed contests for good.

We've had two years between most of the contests for the last 8 years ago. I'd expect that to be the norm going forward.

I imagine he'll want to do another "gimmick" contest to put space between standard character battles. Which only begs the question - what will it be? Something like "best song", and have tracks for people to listen to?

We already had Game of the Decade 2 (about a year and a half ago) between the previous character battle in late 2018 and now.

Since last character battle we've seen all the Smash Ultimate Fighters' Pass inclusions, RE2 (also RE3) and FFVII remakes, Kingdom Hearts III (whatever it's worth), and Metroid Dread, so even among gamefaqs mainstays there's reason for a lot of them to have potentially shifted a bit. Who knows what Geralt or 2B are worth at this point. Presumably Doom Slayer's got enough clout to get in now? Maybe Ryu bombs less terribly now that Street Fighter V is less fresh? Maybe we can have a Sonic vs. Pikachu Battle of "They had a Movie" and perhaps Sonic Mania vs. the post-Sword/Shield disappointment of the latter can make Sonic competitive there? Do people anti-vote Chris Pratt and do we get a trailer mid-contest?

Feels like there's lots of things to discuss by now and cool stuff that could happen that are different than last Character Battle.

90s GotD is gonna be kinda boring but not the worst thing ever. The top tier games are gonna absolutely stomp and the low tier games are gonna be bottom of the barrel fodder. Also it is probably gonna be one of the easier contests to predict. Best Game Ever IV would be a lot more interesting because the last one was ruined by the rallies and I feel like BotW beating Ocarina isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Character Battle XI is my preferred option since we got a games contest last time.

I'm curious to see what Age of Empires II will do with all the continued support it has received.

I think you're overestimating the average strength of 90s games. There's definitely the elite tier (OoT, FFVII, SM64, MGS), but you really don't have to dig down far to find fodder. Even a 64-game bracket would have some real stinker matches. Banjo-Kazooie and Star Fox 64 would be in the 10 strongest N64 titles, but I wouldn't call either of them strong.

Not to mention Paper Mario and Majora's Mask were released in 2000, making them ineligible...

The 90s will have a larger group of top end games than other decades. They'll have plenty of fodder too but certainly not more than the original GotD and definitely not more than GotD2.

Final Fantasy X was almost the strongest game in GotD.

Link's Awakening would beat it effortlessly, and might not even be a top ten game of the 90s.

We thought Majora overperformed due to being the Zelda proxy, but have we considered that FFX was a fraud that benefitted from not having to face anything old in 4-ways and then in GotD being the FF7 proxy?

I mean it doesn't matter now because the point is that FFX vs. MMX and SMRPG vs. RE4/MGS3 exposed how hard dumb the 'old games cannot compete with new ones!' theory always was, so I wouldn't be surprised if Link's Awakening was stronger than Majora's Mask back then.

The people who thought this were wrong.

I mean, if you look at something like MMX/LA in 2009 and FFX/MMX in 2015, it probably does imply LA > FFX, but

1. Constant MMX is pretty dubious.
2. Possibility of LFF and general fourway screwery in 2009.
3. At the margins 2015 MMX seemed to benefiting from Melee's substantial (though not yet dominant) and utterly pointless rally against GSC.
