Every government should aim to be the least authoritarian they can be, it keeps them from getting as corrupted or at least minimizes the damage they can do when they get corrupted

Every time a government gets too authoritarian its bad for them because it just leads to revolutions and said government being overthrown

that actually just makes it very easy for that government to be taken over or influenced by corrupt groups because they end up having no impactful response since they have no meaningful authority, you see it all over the world

Like most things it isnt black and white and is an ongoing balance

I'm not saying having some authority is bad, we need that protection from outside forces but many governments just want to impose their will on the people and go way too far. When you start oppressing your own people it's bad for everyone, including the oppressors who will get overthrown. Everyone just seems to want to get to 1984 or BNW levels of authoritarianism like that was a blueprint and not a warning.

Historically speaking, that doesn't happen very often, usually usurpers are violently crushed under the boots of their oppressors. Ruling with an iron fist is incredibly effective, and it's not like there is an international organization that is going to actually do something about it.

And when the oppressors do get overthrown, the overthrowers almost inevitably turn into the next batch of oppressors (and often far worse ones), because people suck.

The problem with all forms of government and organization is that they all involve humans. If you want perfect government, we pretty much need to turn it all over to the AI and let them kill us.
