Someone mentioned Predestination so I'm just here to second that recommendation. Great movie and one of the strongest examples of time traveling done right

Edit: when I say "done right" I mean it doesnt have the usual inconsistencies that time travel stories usually fall victim to.

So because I've had time loops on my brain for a couple days now I did have an idea for a different take on the genre that I don't think I've seen done before.

In these types of movies there is typically something bad happening that the scenario get's looped until it is fixed (Edge of Tomorrow, Source Code) or the main character needs to do the right sequence of things (Groundhog day) or something along those lines. But the end result is usually something better happening. What if it were the reverse?

More specifically I'm thinking about those interview you see on local news stations when someone does something awful and the neighbor next door always says how shocked they are and says something like "If you had asked me yesterday, I would have told you they weren't capable of doing something so awful" in reference to whatever atrocity had been committed by their neighbor.

Well what if yesterday they weren't capable.

What if a perfectly normal and nice person got stuck in a day loop and rather than taking the opportunity to improve themselves or have that perfect kind of day to break the loop they instead go the other direction. A slow descent into madness while they relive the same day thousands of times again. And the day loop just happens to end on a day where the main character did something particularly heinous, but rather than a day reset they are now stuck with the consequences of their actions.

That's really all I have to my idea so far, but to me at least that sounds like something I'd be interested in seeing. And as far as I know nothing like that has been done, but maybe some of you have heard of something like that?

Not actually a time loop movie but in a similar vein, Memento is so good.

Well it's not a movie, but I watched a playthrough of Twelve Minutes which hit a lot of the same notes.

I've been playing through 12 Minutes, it's quite frustrating; much like how a real time loop would be I suppose! But it's fun trying new stuff every loop and man the way the story unfolds is really neat. But I've also hit a wall and I'm not quite sure what to try next. I've only gotten one ending so far too.

I was super excited for 12 Minutes for a long time and the first dozen loops were interesting but by the end I thought it sucked

Yeah I wasn't crazy about how it ended. It didn't help that the playthrough i was watching (Atrioc) involved a lot of the same choices being selected on accident numerous times, or him not quite connecting some dots quickly enough. I think I might have enjoyed it slightly more playing it myself, but ultimately would have been unsatisfied by the result.

I think it's worth going through a couple of loops, once you really get going, every time you'll want to stop you'll immediately think of like 10 more things to try.

on the subject of time loop recs, I liked Raging Loop - it's a mafia time loop visual novel (with the roles being re-rolled each iteration) and it's pretty sweet

(mild spoilers?) it also kinda delves into FD's "descent into madness over multiple time loops" idea

oh that reminds me I was gonna rec Gnosia, which also falls under the category of "mafia time loop visual novel" (though with more of a slant towards actual mafia gameplay than RL, from what I've heard of the latter?)

Raging Loop and Gnosia are both absolutely fantastic

began reading another in japanese with a really good premise (kurikaesu) but japanese is hard and i'm lazy. it was about a guy with the power to turn back time as much as he wanted but tragedies would never fundamentally change no matter his actions, so the theme was the opposite of the usual time loop story; coping with loss and moving on, rather than overcoming impossible odds

yeah, RL doesn't have gameplay. the framework of mafia is the literary conflict basically
