Well mainly cause of the historical lore you learn late in the main quest.

Dagoth Ur was the only one that stayed loyal to Neraverine back in the day. The others all betrayed him. Dagoth was your bro. I know he kinda goes insane later but maybe I could have helped him get back to normal

This reminds me of a journal I found in Skyrim written by a Khajiit who liked to murder other Khajiit so he could sell their furs. It started as an accident you see

I mean sure he was loyal to Nerevar, and the Tribunal in all likelihood murdered Nerevar to take the Heart for themselves, but look at what they did with that power.

The Tribunal set themselves up as protectors of Morrowind and were beloved by the people, performing miracles and enhancing the quality of life of citizens.

Dagoth Ur sat up in his tower giving people nightmares and turning them into slaves and elephant men

Yeah, they are the reason why the Chimer were cursed and continued to suffer after Dagoth Ur was slain. I killed Vivec for his soul, too.

Also Dagoth Ur has one of the coolest lines ever:

"What a fool you are. I'm a god. How can you kill a god? What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. No Recall or Intervention can work in this place. Come. Lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy."

True, though I'll add the main thing that fucked up Morrowind after they disappeared/died was Baar Dur colliding with Vvardenfell.

That was entirely Vivec's fault, though whether it was out of neglect or malice it's hard to say.

I mean yeah I'd mostly blame the guy who actually threw the rock to begin with, but Vivec had an opportunity to just get rid of it and decided he either liked having it as a trophy or a thing he could hold over everyone's head and say "hey, love me or else"

He supposedly achieved CHIM, but even with that as we've seen in Morrowind, he still has limitations without the Heart.

IMO he didn't ascend, he probably just withdrew from the world and started wandering around whatever dimensions/planes of Oblivion interested him in search of more knowledge/enlightenment.
