No, Silksong was not here

I for one was massively taken aback by Axiom Verge 2's shadowdrop! Overall it was a good showing though, I'm especially into TOEM and Eastward.

Axiom Verge 2 today is pretty hype.

Eastward looks like it could be alright, but the combat doesn't look very good IMO?

Metal Slug Tactics looked the best

I love Metroidvanias and Axiom Verge 1 was the most genuine Metroidvania that wasn't a Metroid or a Castlevania title that I have ever played
But...it wasn't very good imo. Kinda weak level design and boring boss fights.
Wondering if the second is any better

I really liked Axiom Verge but it had clear parts where it could be improved. I hope they go more into the glitchy stuff, that's where I found the game at its most unique. I also think the game was overall a little too married to the old NES style aesthetic and way of showing plot, glad the new one looks like it's progressed from that. And a couple of the puzzles were just too esoteric for me.

Basically I'm hoping AV2 is like Super Metroid to AV1's original Metroid.

Anyway, more trailers:

Axiom Verge 2 looks good, but focusing on melee combat instead of guns is sad IMO. Gun Metroidvanias are a lot less common.

Yeah Axiom Verge really nailed the NES aesthetic almost to its detriment. It's kind of boring.

Weird, I kind of feel like it's the opposite! Maybe not guns specifically but I feel like most Metroidvanias are projectile based.

Hmm, there are some that have both (like Rabi Ribi) and others with close-ranged projectiles (like Ori 1), but focusing on projectiles Metroid-style feels rare to me. Touhou Luna Nights and Shadow Complex are the only big one I can think of. Melee games:

Ori 2
Hollow Knight
Ender Lilies
Dust
Guacamelee
Bloodstained
Momodora Reverie

etc. I think Melee is quite a bit more common, though I could be wrong.

To me, level design is what makes a Metroidvania a Metroidvania, not the combat itself
Somehow I forgot Bloodstained! it was great

I haven't thought about it before but I think I like the idea of long-range combat in Metroidvanias more in general. But yeah most of the great indie ones in the genre that I've played are melee focussed, and I adore Hollow Knight!

More trailers. What did the 'something else' voters like best btw?

Axiom Verge 2! Just found out it got released and immediately bought it. About to start playing tonight. Incredibly excited, I basically found the original to be a perfect game. Only Silksong is my more anticipated upcoming indie game.

Also, I'm legitimately tempted to buy Tetris Effect Connected on Switch despite having it on Game Pass. I never beat the final boss in the co-op mode, and that mode is so damn cool. But it could be pretty hard to find people on the Xbox in that mode :(

That is another perfect video game.

E: From what I'm seeing, Tetris Effect apparently does have crossplay, but it's only in Friend matches for now and not with randos? Huh. Sounds like they're still working on it though, so there's hope.

And here's the Garden Story trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJee_PBds00

The other trailers are all for ports I think. And I just noticed the subtitle for Slime Rancher is 'Plortable Edition' lol, nice touch.

Has anyone played AV2 or any of the other new games yet?
