He has cool music
He kills Aerith (but will he again?)
He has that cool scene where he stands in a fire looking scary
He has one angel wing which is pretty unique looking
There's that cool scene where you follow a trail of bodies he left behind which was removed in the remake.

Outside of that he seems pretty standard villain to me but maybe those moments are enough. Was he a bigger deal in the 90s when villains like him weren't as common? I played FFVII over a decade later on the Vita lol

Everything post FFVII has turned him into a creepy stalker obsessed with Cloud to the point that it's become his defining character trait.

Yeah I get that meme especially from the Smash Bros thing (I know his Kingdom Hearts boss fight is a big deal too) but I'm mostly talking about the OG game.

Actually yeah One Winged Angel might be enough.

I was a bit disappointed this wasn't in the remake. Not really sure why it wasn't. It was one of the more memorable scenes IMO.

I don't remember much of him after disc 1 and him killing aerith in ff7. But in KH1 he was a cool and mysterious super boss that I think what sparked his popularity for the most part.

But in remake in my opinion he's just a creeper, who appears in visions(?) Periodically throughout the game that get old. Waltz up Shinra tower pg13 like, and is then show horned as the final.

Which was kind of weird becuase he's portrayed so powerfully in story that I didn't think the heroes could win..... until they did.

I do think it's kind of funny how different the actual FF7 Sephiroth is from the way he's depicted in pop culture, especially how the "Sephiroths" you meet throughout the game aren't even his actual body (though they are being controlled by him)

I don't think he actually has any logical reason to fight Cloud at the end of Remake but One Winged Angel needs to be used for something.

Speaking of which what was the name of that music track they used when he would pop up to taunt Cloud? That was also cool.

he was firmly middle of the road in ff7. looks cool and has an all right backstory, but there were better contemporary jrpg villains

he should have stayed gone after ff7. Everything theyve done with him after has been awful cringy shit.

Fans and stuff post 7 turned him into an emo weirdo. IIRC when youre in Kalm and they are talking about him in the story he seems like a cocky kinda dude. Then he finds out about the Jenova stuff and loses his shit

Hes pretty cool within FFVII: hes this total badass who goes insane, murders a ton of randos, murders Aeris, and controls Jenova. But is he even separate from Jenova any more? Hes an active presence and toys with Cloud in a really novel way even if his aims are generic for a JRPG antagonist. Kingdom Hearts handles him decently, but nothing else did.

I've gone back and forth since its release on thinking he's awesome, to lame, and am right at the middle now.

His motives and character depth is among the best and most interesting in the series, but is hampered a bit by the fact that he's physically not there through 95% of it. But existing as psychological concept for Cloud's state of mind is still a cool concept in itself

His goal was to punch a hole in the planet, and when the planet healed itself, he'd be at the center absorbing that energy.

Which is incredibly stupid when you remember he's been in the lifestream the entire game, literally just floating in the energy he wanted.

I am a fanboy but I liked his identity crisis that intermingled with his parental issues. Us finding out he was experimented on from the time he was in the womb and through his childhood. Lied to and believed his mother was an alien, but falsely discovered she was an ancient and lost his shit as a result. Supposedly died but actually fell into the lifestream and began absorbing it as he manipulated Jenova and the reunion to bring about his own calamity to become a god.

Your first real introduction to him is just mind-blowing.. An utter badass who is one shooting everything. Cool, calm and collected until it all falls apart. We believe everything that is going on as we experience Cloud and Sephiroth's delusions as if they are real. Only to discover gradually through the game how wrong we were.

Maybe it's like drinking a 1000 gallon drink through a capri sun straw.. And he just wants to rupture it and drink it all at once.

It's his actual theme song in the original, you only hear One Winged Angel in one phase of his boss fight.

I mean compared to the rest of FF villains he's still top tier. Seymour is lame. Chaos is just Chaos. Exdeath is a weird tree. Cloud of Darkness is a long walk with no save points. Ultimecia makes no fucking sense. Kuja is decent but then Necron gotta pop outta nowhere talking like Yoda and ruining the tension. FFXIII was the opposite where the Orphan makes the Owl pope look lame by comparison. Kefka is just magic Joker...but I still love him. Ardyn is actually alright, it's just everything around him that's mediocre.
That leaves...Vayne and Cid from XII, the Emporer from 2, Wiegraf from Tactics (all the villains from Tactics. And Delita), Golbez and Zemus/Zeromus, Kefka is still here, and Hojo from FF7 as all being better villains which leaves Sephiroth in the upper echelon especially when you get to all the games I didn't even bother mentioning. Like Tactics Advance.

Yes hes overrated but hes still cool. One of the few final fantasy villains that are more known for their physical capabilities more than magic. Points docked though cause this isn't displayed in the final boss fight. He looks cool. And has perhaps one of the most iconic boss themes not just in final fantasy but games in general.

But I felt other bosses in the series where better. Like love or hate 15 I think ardyn had a far more compelling back story and personality. And Kuja imo is more of a badass. Vayne too for that matter. He had the balls to fight 4 fully armed heros with his fists. That and vayne technically succeeded im his goals iirc even if he didnt get to live to enjoy it.

He was cool villain in a good game that's remembered as one of the best of its genre.

You could make an argument that anything about ff7 or any media as revered and popular as it is, is "overrated".
