I'm not convinced that gameplay in the 90s was any better than it is now.

At least games were games and not cutscene after cutscene.

This is true and you didnt have microtransaction bullshit or shitty DRM or anything like that. Yes there was expansions for games but that wasn't cut content that was originally included in the game.

We don't. I've been saying it for years now that one of the major problems with games these days is that they focus too much on looking "pretty", rather than taking what we have now and applying it to older style of games. For example, an RPG similar to Final Fantasy 9 with updated graphics, little to no load times, and the like. Modernized if you will.

We were all too willing to chuck static backgrounds in the trash once we reached the PS4 era of gaming, despite there actually being nothing wrong with it. In fact, that's what game the Playstation FF games their charm. The charm that I enjoyed.

I've been wanting a true Final Fantasy for at least a decade now. I know it won't happen, as they are all too focused on attempting to transition to the action RPG genre, despite them failing at it with every single attempt.

The true FF experience... Active Time Based Combat with control of ALL characters not just one, Overhead world maps, airships, an actually good story. The KISS thought process. Keep it simple stupid. If the formula ain't broke, don't fix it.

And for gods sake if they focused a little less on the artwork, and more on the story I might actually give a shit about FF16. But I really can't care less. 12-15 were horrible; and I couldn't stand Dragon Quest 11 (Too much backtracking, and some character decisions, it got on my nerves).

I feel more that as adults we are just far more critical over video games. And other forms of entertainment in general. Even these overly cutscene driven games being griped about here I bet most of us would have ate that shit up asa kid.

I honestly don't know how you would "modernize" games while intentionally ignoring 20 years of graphical innovations.

Simple things, like smooth animations

For example at 1:59 the windmills are moving, but it isn't a smooth animation, like its maybe 15 fps. One way to improve that would be to double the frames.

Cuphead is a good example of modernizing an old style of cartoon into a modern game. It's simple things like that. Taking an old concept, but bringing it into the 21st century.

Case in point, I'll use FF9 as an example. Moguri Mod is a good example of taking an old concept and updating it. It didn't change a single thing other than redrawing a ton of things in game. You could have a game that looks as good as Final Fantasy 15, but plays like Final Fantasy 9, if that makes any sense.

Essentially a Final Fantasy 7 style game with the remakes graphics.
