Nothing a landlord does adds any value to the economy.

A landlord is simply a person who is able to extract a fee by positioning themselves as a gatekeeper between the masses and the shelter they require to survive.

But if landlords "don't create value" why the fuck does anyone rent?

Some don't have the money. Cool, value demonstrated. Landlords provide a living space for people without the ability to buy property.

No if I were to own the land between an aqueduct and the town which derives its water from said aqueduct, and then I were to place a gate to block access to the water and keep it closed unless the town pays me a "water rental fee", I have not created value. I am simply using property relations to extract wealth by restricting access to a necessity that is otherwise already available. The same is true for landlords.

Yeah, it is known that landlords are parasites. They neither create, sell their time to do work, nor transfer goods to where there is more demand. They just extract money from people and companies for simply owning the land.

There are 4 empty homes for each homeless person in this country. A good chunk of large scale landlords don't rent out a chunk of their properties because it drives up scarcity and thus prices along with allowing them the ability to write that "loss" off on their taxes.

Can anyone dispute the fact that for many people, they don't actually provide a service?

I'm not talking about people who are mobile, unattached to an area, don't want to deal with maintenance, or want special services.

I'm talking about poor and working class people who just want a roof over their heads, but can't buy one. For them, renting isn't a voluntary and rational choice they're making, it's a fee they pay to avoid being on the street.

They very often pay to live in unsafe, unhealthy, or even unliveable housing. Again, not because of their desires, but because of the amount of money they have. This rented housing is often more expensive on a monthly basis than buying a comparable unit. And the renter builds no equity, they are simply setting money on fire each month.

If the person that is renting a place like that because of lack of money lacks money and can't pay rent in full for any reason, the landlord doesn't even have to maintain the unit anymore and can stop providing whatever "services" they provide.

Doesn't seem like a free and equal exchange to me.

My parents have been trying to sell their old home for a few years now. They're only asking $40,000 which is almost giving it away. I've shown it to about a dozen families who are currently renting, some paying up yo $750 a month. No one that I had shown the house to could get a loan and most of them wanted to rent it. A lot of people prefer to rent to avoid any responsibilities.

Between taxes and utilities, It costs my parents $3,000 a year just to keep the house. Should they let someone live there for free and risk them destroying the home?

Housing should be free as fuck

^This is the real sentiment behind these threads.
A certain number of people think they should just be able to live where they like for nothing.
It's fucking absurd on the face of it and a level of self entitlement even the boomer generation never reached.
You have always had to pay to live somewhere. Be it rent or a mortgage.
Unless you want to live in government housing which fucking sucks.
Do we need to reform the rental sector and put stronger regulations in place?
Absolutely.
Does that mean some posters with shitty job prospects can sit in their underwear playing their PS5 all day living rent free and collecting $3,000 a month on UBI while the rest of us go to work to pay for it?
Hell no.

I can think of a dozen issues with completely free housing immediately and they're all about exploitation. Giving homes out on a first come first serve basis wouldn't be fair at all.

What would drive people to work? If you just get everything for free, why should you work? Why should anyone? What kind of world do you expect we'll have if nobody works?

I don't understand the issue Gamefaqs lefties have with landlords. You know that no matter whether you're a renter or an owner you're going to have to pay someone for the right to live there don't you? If you're a home owner then your bank and the government become the new "landlords" as you pay off your mortgage, and then when you're done with that you still have to pay property tax for the rest of your life. At least when you rent an apartment or house the landlord will pay to have any repairs done and may even do the repairs themselves whereas if you're an owner your bank and government landlords won't pay for anything.

A lot of these guys also don't seem to realize that people that own properties have to pay City, County, and School taxes on that property.

My taxes are around $1,500 a year. But my same house up on the hill in the rich section would be close to $4,000. People with a low income couldn't even afford to live there purely based on the taxes alone.

It comical that people think that landlords just sit back and collect money. There is a guy renting a house out accross the street from me for $600(including all utilities except internet) and he is there once a week taking care of what ever issues the people have and cuts the grass.
