I've never played Runescape but I always hear about folks maxing levels in certain skills. Like what does something like archeology do for you in the game? Or is it just a completionist thing to want to max these skills?

You unlock content and rewards. The main benefit of archeology is in Relic powers which can give you bonuses towards other parts of the game.

But its also this. There didnt used to be a specific reward for maxing but now there is in the form of the Max Guild and Max Cape, both of which are very useful, with the cape being the third best cape in the game.

Most people until they get close to maxing tend to only do the skills they actually like and/or need to use.

Thats why if Archeology (which is like, a year old or something) didnt exist farming would be my last 99 as I just never use it.
