Obviously don't lie about things that can be easily disproven and don't misrepresent your skillset because you will quickly be found out and embarrassed.

But if you need to fudge dates to obscure an employment gap, or if you have practical experience in something that the potential employer will only recognize in the form of job experience, it's perfectly fine.

Employers gatekeep perfectly fine candidates for arbitrary and stupid reasons (or so they can justify paying experienced workers entry-level wages) and they lie and obscure everything from pay, hours, benefits, work environment and even your actual job responsibilities and expectations.

So I say fuck it. Do what you gotta do to survive this job market.

That's not what the first sentence says. Did you fail reading in grade school?

Word.

If a job has a hard requirement of a year's worth of experience in a role, yet you only have 6 months and know you can still do the job, you can say you worked that job for a year.

If they ask for work references, get a family member or friend to act as your reference.

Obviously.

Jobs shut down good candidates because of absurd pre-qualifications. They just need to have a test to show you can actually do said job.

My boss retired and they posted her job with the qualifications requiring masters level accounting or previous accounting and managerial experience. Had several good outsiders apply from different industries but would not have known any questions on the assessment test since they were specific to the job. The employer wanted to recruit a previous employee who backed out at the last minute and then gave the job to my coworker who had none of the qualifications and has only been working entry level for one year. Simply because this person pitched a fit about wanting the job.
same person also is anti-vax and violated HIPAA by discovering who was out for Covid that didnt want it disclosed.

Moral of the story is if you are a good and hard worker you will be overlooked.

What businesses have you applied for that dont allow coworker references? Family members should be an obvious no, but people who have worked with you for months or years are going to know your skill set and work ethic.

Employers arent even allowed to provide feedback in many states, outside of are they eligible to be rehired? Its a simple yes or no question with them.

It very well could be me just misremembering. It's been about 5 years since I've filled out an app. Maybe that was it, just the family members, and that's all I had when I WAS looking for a job since the job I had before this one as like 5 years in between and all the people I did work with I had no way to get into contact with them. This was the Montana job that I just ended up quitting out of the blue because I was on the verge of [ToS] and I had to get back to Portland and people that cared about my mental health

Its entirely possible you applied to private companies that have their own criteria for references. In the past, I have actually NOT included my former supervisors as references, as most people dont leave their jobs, they leave their bosses.

The only time my references were ever called was for a volunteer thing that I thought would be good to show I management experience. Served my two years and quit after realizing that was totally pointless.

We, unfortunately, are stuck with this very employee who did just that.

What I'm referring to is....let's say you have graphic design experience, but you've only ever done projects for yourself, friends and family.

Frame it as work experience, which it technically is. It's just not formal experience.

That's on the employer for not just running him through a quick trial like many other contruction company's do.

Oh, this would have been at places like Target or Costco. Nothing like a tech company or something. I have never once got a job based on a job interview or application, but by people who work there telling them how great of a worker I am.

I ride a forklift for a living. We won't do this for liability reasons. God forbid they hit something or someone.
