wondering how normal it is for people to do so because im thinking of canceling my PTO after finding out that we might not go with our kids to the Giants game anymore and Id rather not waste time off just to sit at home and do nothing or just do something boring like go to Trader Joes

How much time are we talking? If it's just a day you could always just chill at home and spend time w your kids.

eh Im not the biggest fan of staying home all day if I had to go through the trouble of getting a PTO approved. It would feel like an absolute waste.

The day off would need to be worth it IMO because these things are hard to come by

Back when I was 18, I had enough money to buy a plane ticket to Louisiana to see my dad's family for the first time since I was a toddler. The week before I was supposed to go, my dad says it wasn't a good time and told me to cancel. I had everything planned months before and had to pay cancellation fees.

I worked that week I was supposed to take off and didn't speak to him for over a year.

Yep. I go out of my way check with my workers before booking time off to make sure there's no konflicts of interests, but last time, something still popped up. The Muslim woman was invited across the kountry to the seaside with her friends. I was annoyed at the bad luck as I turned her down, but eventually said "fuck it" and ask my manager if I kould kancel my week in favor of her day. It's not like I had anything in particular planned. Ended up doing that for nothing though. She finally found a morning job now of all times and it started a few days before her day, so she ended up not going anyway.

Yes, I requested a couple days off early last year so I could house sit for my parents while they were on a trip, but they canceled it because Covid became a thing right before it so I canceled my request.

I get 5 weeks plus 7 sick days and 11 holidays. I take all my time off in the year. I use my sick days for Dr appointments. I dont see a reason to retract the time unless I know I will need the time later in the year.

No, but I have to burn through all my PTO each year before I lose it, and I would never get through it all if I didn't "waste" it on regular do nothing days.

Where I work it is pretty common for people to not take PTO because their plans fell through. I've also done the opposite and chilled at home playing video games or hanging out with the kids when plans fell through.
Though my company is also pretty generous with the amount of PTO you can carry over from year to year as well as allowing people to sell some unused PTO at the end of the year.
