I rewatched it last year after not seeing it for like a decade. It's like, dude how could you trust Gollum when he already tried to kill yall? "the ring did this to him" my ass, "the ring" or not, he's gonna try to kill again

Yes, the Ring gives him unnatural long life. This is further proved by Bilbo, *mild spoilers* who is abnormally old for a Hobbit at the start of LotR, with Gandalf even commenting that he hasn't aged a day; as soon as he gives up the ring, old age hits Bilbo like a freight train.

movies cut a lot of content, the books went over that effect several times. best description i can think of is bilbo's line

I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.

essentially the ring doesn't grant eternal life, it just stretches out what you already have. smeagol had it for over 500 years.
