Again, apologies if this whole discussion was just caused by me just not understanding what exactly people meant by their praise of the characters.

I just wanted you to elaborate bro its all good. I definitely get where you're coming from, I just use "story" to be more comprehensive in this project series. Maybe because its about video games? I'm considering all the non story elements that still contribute to how the story is told. Obviously this includes gameplay but not in the sense of how good or fun the gameplay, just how it elevates the story (or doesn't). Its how I can give high marks to a game like hollow knight or half-life despite a lack of a strong script or many characters.

Really weird for a wrestling fan to take game story like this

Like do you think a match structured identically between The Second City Saints and The Briscoes tells as effective a story as an identically structured match between The Headbangers and Khali+Jinder Mahal. Even ignoring the talent of the guys in there the actual story wouldn't make sense with a giant playing the role of any of the guys in the first match.

Story is the whole shebang and plot is "in a vacuum" to the extent it can be. And yes I'd even consider soundtrack in story if I felt it actually elevated the storytelling in a meaningful way beyond "I enjoyed the soundtrack"

It's nothing groundbreaking or particularly unique but I've always enjoyed how it takes every cliche JRPG trope it can get its hands on and manages to spin that into something that taken as a whole is really fun. It comes out to be more than the sum of its parts. It's cheesy as hell but it knows what it wants to be. And as mention, the strong cast goes a long way.
