Cant go wrong with either. I picked The Wire because its shorter? I dont know why that would be a factor but it was the logic I used.

You probably wouldn't like The Wire. It accurately portrays a modern, American city.

I have to say The Sopranos. It's my favorite show, but The Wire is juuuust behind it.

They're both amazing. Watch em both.

The Wire, for sure.

I really enjoyed The Sopranos, too, but in the later seasons when it was being more artistic, it took some getting used to, and while I appreciate it, it wasn't as good as it was earlier in the series, IMO.

There's no wrong answer here as long as you watch both eventually.

Lots of people hate on season 2, but most come around and like it on rewatches when they see where the dockworkers play into the concept of the whole show. I still don't see how people can rank it below season 5 anyway. Still, no season is bad. It just has a least good one.

The Wire is the GOAT television show, but I wouldn't really call it a "gritty crime drama". On the surface it appears to be a "crime drama" but there is so much more going on than cops vs bad guys. It's about the whole city of Baltimore and how "the system" sucks up everyone around it.

tbh, I tried watching The Wire and did appreciate its realistic portrayal of an American city but still found it really boring.

Sopranos is fantastic all the way through, and it's enjoyable on any level you want to watch it on. Face value, deeper analysis, artsy bullshit, it has everything.

the wire has ups and downs. the downs make it equal to mediocre shows, the ups are incredibly high and powerful though.

meanwhile, sopranos is pretty much solid throughout. the ups aren't as high, but in general the show is a constant good to great.

i love both equally, best shows of all time.

i will say the sopranos is probably more entertaining and consistent. the wire is a real slow burn and can be a struggle for half the first season. after the 8th episode though, i was absolutely hooked and couldn't stop.

I dont understand anyone who finds The Wire boring.

my step brother said he tried it and found it boring. he basically only enjoys tv / movies for what happens, but doesn't really care about why or how it changes things.

he basically likes flashy action movies and doesn't do drama.

I also found it kind of boring, but that descriptor doesn't apply to me. One of my favorite movies is about an old guy with cancer convincing his city to build a playground...

I was like that with the wire. I gave it like 3 tries through a few episodes and just wasnt liking it. I finally sat down and gave it another go and really enjoyed it the whole way through. It never felt like there was hook to keep you going but the show built and became great.
