Like, I get that they're spiny, so you can't jump on them like you can regular cheep-cheeps... but they only appear in one level and they're all underwater so you wouldn't be able to stomp them anyway. And they don't do anything else differently from normal cheep-cheeps. So why did they even bother???

Anyways, they're there to make it harder for the player to progress... since the old mario games dont allow you to go back, thus making it very easy to find yourself getting pinned by enemies

I spent more time on this than I should have, but I've learned they're not the same as regular cheep cheeps. The wiki says they're faster and when I compared video of the two, I noticed that regular cheep cheeps in Mario 3 tend to only swim back and forth in a specific section and don't seem to move through walls. Spiny cheep cheeps can go across the entire screen and move through at least some kinds of walls.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I guess they are a little different, just kind of odd they made them spiny when just being a different color would've sufficed.

They already had red and blue for the ones that leap out of the water and the ones that just swim. Maybe they just wanted to make it really clear that they were different.
