12/15

Today starts off with a flashback, we view the gang talking about what they wanted to do on the 13th once they got control of the ship. They ask Sara for her input and she says she doesn't care, she lost the will to put in effort after 'Captain Classy' got off. That's a great line lmaooo, I love Sara. They eventually decide that taking back Thors is their primary goal, which seems...kinda weird to me? I mean they all had some pretty good personal motivations, and none of them really have to do with Thors. I get that it's a common general interest of theirs but it's not a particularly strong one for any of them. They go on to say that it would be a good base of operations if they could secure it. I was hoping we'd have the flying fortress Courageous for our home base for the rest of the game, but I suppose they do need to land after all. Having a safe place to consistently restock would be nice. I'm not sure Thors has the infrastructure to support it, but maybe that's why they had to show it landing on the soccer field in the first game. Sorry kids, soccer is cancelled this year, we're all becoming airline mechanics instead!

They also discuss their plan to recruit the student body back by getting them onboard the ship, two thoughts here. First off, Suikoden subplot is back?! Second thought, I'd have to assume after a few months that a lot of these former students have got their own things going on. We've already seen it with Rosaline being a nun now and all that. Why do they just assume they'll all be willing to join them? Hopefully the game at least provides some resistance to their naivety, with Trails that's a 50/50. Anyway, Towa says that the staff they currently have onboard the ship aren't here as a full time job, so it's best to have some students trained to replace them. I guess none of us can afford to pay these guys out of pocket, yeah...though isn't Alfin on board? Can't the Imperial family cover the expenses here so we don't have literal children trained for a day flying this thing? Whatever...it'll be fine...

Moving on, it's time for bracer missions! They introduce us to an orbal computer on the bridge that Olivert has hooked up to give us requests from all over the country. I guess that means that the game will finally be opening up to us? Interesting! Falcom has finally reached the JRPG open world zenith that has been in place in Final Fantasy since the 80s, so shoutouts to them for that. Having an airship does feel real good though I have to admit. Time to get started, they're giving me 2 required and 2 optional quests for now. It's also time to pick my party, but apparently Gaius is forced to be included this go around. I guess they need to include him now so we can safely forget about him for the rest of the game like in CS1. Sorry buddy, I like you but you just don't do anything! If we're lucky we can get Elliot and Millium out of the way over the next two days and it'll be smooth sailing after that. My party for now, I settle on Alisa, Laura, Jusis, and Sara. I'd swap out Gaius for Machias ideally, but he'll have to do for now. Let's get going!

I finally get control so I get to check out that equipment that Toval gave me, which reduces casting time by 1/3 instead of 1/2 like it did for him. I guess we get his hand-me-downs. Dude's still got a fight of his own to go after so I understand, Toval. Anyway, that's insanely broken regardless so I get that shit onto Alisa. After that it's time to explore the ship and see what this baby has going on. There's some training rooms on the 4th floor for melee, ranged, and artes. I'm not sure what their purpose will be, maybe I can get some stat boosts or something? There's also a weapon shop on the second floor that drains me of all my Mira. I can only afford to upgrade the people I'm actually using, and only their weapons. I got like one piece of armor on top of that lol.

Millium is standing nearby, and Rean takes this chance to ask her about the Black Workshop he learned about from Altina 2 days ago. Millium says she's not sure what she can tell us, but decides that "only the non-confidential info in their intelligence division file should be fine". How does she have just that memorized, exactly? +1 to the robot theory man. Even if she's an obnoxious robot instead of a robotic robot like Altina. Anyway, she basically just tells us that they're a secretive weapons developer that has ties to the Noble alliance. I remember them mentioning that Alisa's moms company was making weapons for the Nobles last game, so maybe they will be related? Reinford needs to start getting into this somehow they've been a little absent thus far. Millium also tells us that Chancellor Osborne used to have connections there, which is how he obtained Lammy for Millium. Also she even told us that there's things she's hiding from us, so I suppose this plot will be explored further later.

You can play some Blade in the break room here so I gain some link XP here. Basically the same game as in 1 but with two new cards. Down on the bottom floor there's an orbal factory, and George lets us know that we'll be able to customize Valimar and the motorcycle here. I want a pretty-in-pink Valimar skin pronto. And an Elie themed motorcycle skin like I could get in Crossbell. I guess Alisa will have to do for now. George's shop has a sidecar attachment for the bike for 10k Mira in his shop...I'm weak willed so I scrounge together the cash by selling random shit for awhile. I love my customizations. I now have 400 Mira total to my name, so hopefully I can make some money soon lol.

Nothing left for me to do so I head back to the bridge, and the map opens up with destinations I've been to previously in this game. The first place I check out is Ymir, because someone said you could get some contacts here before. I search for awhile but I wasn't able to find them, so maybe a bad lead? Or that part of the game is already passed :(. Hopefully I can get back to Celdic (wasn't an option to fly to) at some point so I can find that travelling merchant again. Then again he was a travelling merchant, so he's probably not there anymore...I'll find you one day. There are 3 new books in a shop here though, which drops my total to 100 Mira. I should probably do some quests now to make some money lol.

While I'm here I also tackle the snowboarding minigame which rewards me with a Silver Bell orbment, cuts delay in half for mirage arts as well as grants 25ATS. Seems like it's made for Emma but I'm not really using her, so I'll stick it with Jusis for now. Alisa isn't rocking any mirage skills currently but he's got one, I'm sure we can deck him out with more later. That is one big downside of this simplified orbment system though, it's really hard to give your casters as many skills as you used to be able to. And honestly I hardly find it any easier to choose which orbments to use, it still takes me a lot of messing around to figure out how exactly I want people set up. Overall just a worse change IMO.

Can't find anything else to do in Ymir though so I head to Legram, since there was a quest for me at the inn there. Before that though I head to the Bracer Guild on the off chance that Toval was there, but no dice. The receptionist there does give me a helpful hint however, he says that there are some students on a nearby highway to recruit so I make a plan to head out and look after I finish up here. The quest here is some kid who's looking for their friend, who is "on the other side of the country (from Legram)". Legram's all the way to the south, so looking up north we find Ymir, which is unfortunately where I just came from. Let me just fast travel back real quick...

...and that's done. Back to Legram, at the shop there's another book I don't have so after buying that, for the first time I'm down to 0 Mira. I really need to go out onto the highway and fight some stuff lol, this hurts. I finish up around town beforehand however and find two students who want to join me, Vivi and Caspar. They were part of one of the main quests which was to recruit some students, so I assume some will be optional with that tip from the bracer guild earlier. Following his lead, I search the highway for awhile trying to find them but I wasn't able to find anyone. I went all the way up to Bareahard where they stop you and force you to turn around, so I'm not sure what that was about. Not like the Bracers to give out bad info. Not sure what else to do now, so I fast travel over to Zender Gate since it's where the other optional quest was.

Once I get there and check out the map I see a lone yellow dot for an NPC way out in the corner of the map, in that plateau where you land with Valimar in Act 1. After a trek out there I find Beryl out there, the psychic student, just chilling by herself. She wasn't one of the four I needed for the main quest, but Rean tries to recruit her onboard the Courageous anyway, though she declines me. I guess that's nice that they all wont just drop what they're doing on a whim to come with us, like I was saying earlier. As far as I can tell though she's just existing on this mountaintop, but I guess that's enough for her. I have a feeling that she'll ultimately join us however.

I go back to Zender Gate and go inside and don't find General Craig, who was the one who had the mission for me. Of course it is at this point that I realize that he was not the guy stationed here, that was General Zechs. Craig was at the other one, so now I have to turn around and go to Garellia Fortress instead. No wonder Beryl wasn't ready to join me yet! Hopefully she stays there for a few days but I wouldn't be surprised if she up and leaves the instant that we're required to go to Zender. Also, I really wish the optional quests told you where they actually were instead of just saying who it was that needed the request done. I mean it's cool that the game doesn't hold your hand, but on the flip side it's like, I would totally tell someone where I was if I wanted them to come to me, you know?

Anyway when you get to Garellia it has you in the ruins instead of their camp so you get to explore those for the first time. I don't find anyone here to talk to but I do find a trial chest for Fie and Sara. And holy shit, guys....it has a fucking chest quote!!!!! I missed these so much. "If you want a little beer, get a pint glass. If you want more, a tankard. But if you want to really get smashed, pour it into a Vale-stein." I love it! I miss them. Why in the world did they remove chest quotes from the rest of the game? They gave the game so much flavor. I have to wonder why this random chest has one but not any of the others though. Maybe it'll be an act 2 thing? I think I've found some chests before but I'm not sure. Anyway, the fight itself is really easy, even with Fie under leveled and underequipped. You get a rare Speed Breaker 2 as a reward, and Sara started with a normal Speed Breaker 1 so that's a nice upgrade for her.

Making my way into camp, you can recruit Monica to join you here, and start Craig's quest. I have to find a missing civilian, and the hints given to me around town point me to the ruins that, once again, I just came from...0/2 today. Back at the ruins, who has appeared but the one, the only, Anton! He got separated from Ricky and is looking for him endlessly. I respect your dedication, buddy. After finishing that quest, a cryptid appears in the ruins as an optional boss fight. I try to start it and lose in about 30 seconds? Holy shit...I don't see how it's possible to beat this thing right now. It has 280k HP which is an insane amount, and has a spell 'Ancient Glyph' that hits my whole team and one shots almost everybody. This one is going to take some work.

OK, fast forward an hour of theorycrafting and rinse and repeating and I finally figured out how to beat it.
Trick one: All of his attacks count as magic when he's hitting you from afar, so put your entire party in the backline, and put in Emma. Her job is spamming the magic reflect craft every chance you get.
Trick two: Have Alisa in the party to keep Insight on everyone, as well as boost their CP as you'll need it.
Trick three: Machias needs to be included so he can use Burst Drive to speed up Emma's slow ass and let her actually get magic reflects off.
Trick four: Jusis should be spamming the Str/Ats/Spd buff on everyone constantly, even though the Str is useless the ATS helps everyone to actually start whittling down that 280k and the SPD is absolutely essential for Emma to get as many magic reflects off as possible.

With that general strategy in mind you can rinse and repeat ad infinitum. Do to some natural mishaps and my requirement of spamming crafts, I had to use both Zeram powders I had in my possession, so hopefully no required fights coming up anytime soon that are particularly difficult. But with persistence and the above strategy I was able to finally take that thing down. Definitely the hardest and most interesting fight of the game so far! Thanks for that one Falcom. As a reward for beating it you get an 'Ultra Rare' Orbment, this one's the Clear Moon Gem. It's got a pink gemstone in the orbment menu which is different from any of the normal colors for them. It unlocks something called a Lost Art, they apparently require 100% of your EP to cast and can only be used once per fight. Crazy! Can't wait to see what this one does since the orbment description doesn't tell us. I equip it on Alisa (it is allowed to go in a Fire slot which is interesting) and it goes to the support section of her arts, so I'm guessing a full party heal/revive/ailment cleanse type thing?

I go out onto the highway to test it out in battle, and it says it restores 200% HP. I have to know, so I try it out...yep! Everyone's HP gets doubled beyond the limit! That's crazy cool, would've been super helpful in that last fight lol. I'm glad to have it now. Further down the highway just exploring I find two students with green !'s above their head. Suspicious! These may be the aforementioned students on the highway to recruit. Wonder why they're all the way out here and nowhere near Legram. Bracer guild needs to get their shit together. The students want me to place some lights around the path for some reason. Sure, whatever you want kids. Figures the Bracers knew about these kids because bracers love replacing highway lights, am I right? Also, while replacing the lights the path leads to the twin dragons bridge area where the contact salesman was, but...he's no longer there. I'll find you again one day, travelling salesman.

After that and going to the end of the path there's nothing else to do after recruiting those kids, so I head back to the ship to turn in some quests. When doing that, what do I see but a section on the orbal computer that shows all of the students that I can currently recruit as well as where they are. First off, how the hell do they have this information? But more importantly, I wish that I knew this menu was here before goose chasing children all over Erebonia. Live and learn, stingers. Apparently I have two students left for my main quest, Mint who's at the watch tower, and Clara at the Ancient Quarry. I was already in the highlands from my poor pathing earlier but I didn't explore enough to find them. Time to go scoop these two up.

Before I go though I gotta explore the ship first to see what my new kids are up to. The ranged training room is now open with one of the girls I found, which apparently lets me do some optional fights with only ranged attackers to unlock some prizes. The first one is pretty easy, but you're not allowed to use arts during it. You get 3 u-materials for beating that. I go to start the second one where you also can't use arts as well as not allowing any deaths. I lost here but it was with 0 cp on all my guys. I'll come back and try this again later. There's also Nicholas in the kitchen, who has some rare dishes to sell us. I don't see much else new here so I head out to Zander gate.

I fast travel to the watchtower to recruit Mint, who wants us to find her lost watch. Didn't we do this quest last game? Anyway instead of being under a tank in the plains, she somehow got her watch on top of a 30 ft antenna at the top of the tower. Oops, I tripped and threw my watch 150 feet in the air, teehee. After that I head to the ancient quarry to recruit the other student, who wants us to go inside and get some rare rocks for her. I do notice that she is sitting by that black tent I noticed in Act 1, so I guess it was her who was camping out here this whole time! I thought it was Altina originally because of the color. Funny that Altina did end up being in the highlands so I assumed I was right then. Right for all the wrong reasons.

There's another trial chest in here, which also has a chest quote. Wait, do the trial chests only give you chest quotes if you don't have the required teammates for them? Does that mean that I've been missing out on messages this whole time by doing trial chests when I did have the right people in my party? I hope not because that would be terrible game design. Anyway, this trial chest is unique because it requires 4 people - Emma, Jusis, Fie, and Gaius. The actual fight is easy, but what's really hard is having to backtrack out of the dungeon to change my team, beat it, backtrack back to change back, then get back to where I was. That was pretty annoying. At least I got a chest message out of it. At the end of the dungeon there's a boss fight with a giant spider which is also pretty easy, but this time I spy a glowing thing on the ground during the cutscene, so I'm guessing this is another black record I'll have to backtrack to get. After the fight it kicks me out of the dungeon...yep. They want you to work for it. Guess I'll walk through this place for the 4th time today @.@ this game is evil lol.

With that out of the way I can head out tot he lake to finish the last story quest. They have me beat up a monster which is just another cryptid reskin of the tutorial monster we fought at the very beginning of the game, though this time we do it Valimar-free. Time to see how much stronger we've gotten! The answer is a lot, he is stupidly easy possibly the easiest fight I've had in this game so far. He has a heal that heals him for like 20k AND buffs his stats but even with that he's not a threat. I guess they know that after people spent hours fighting that optional cryptid earlier they had to make this one a little easier lol. Still a little disappointing.

After we finish that last quest we get a call from Towa asking us to return to the bridge because they found info on one of our relatives. Turns out that Elliot's sister was taken hostage by Jusis' dad's army, and we're gonna be the ones to save her. She was pretty cute so I'm game, even if it is for Elliot *sigh*. After the cutscene I get a call from Clara, the artist student that I did a dungeon 4x for, telling me to go down to the ships hold. I do so and she lets us know a little secret - not only is she an artist, she's also an engineer! She can make us orbs to equip onto Valimar to raise his stats. Cool? Hopefully they use this as an excuse to make the Valimar fights a little more interesting. But they probably won't. I purchase a few of them just in case, they build out of spare orbments and a few U-materials so it's not so bad.

I also apparently have unlocked the ability to call Valimar in a foot battle, for the low low price of 500 EP. Will I ever do so?! Time will tell, but I suspect I will use it as often as Overdrive, ie. never. Man I completely forgot about Overdrive again, it would've probably been useful in the fight with that cryptid earlier so Emma could get more turns in. God dammit why do I always forget it exists -,-

When I go to start the main quest the game lets me know that Elliot is a required teammate, so my wish for Gaius-Elliot-Millium in a row is coming true. Don't fail me game! I guess I should buy him some new equipment now since he's still holding onto his starter stuff. I wouldn't want Elliot to think he's not included after all. But really, getting Gaius and then Elliot out of the way is great, it's like they really know me.

After doing all my shopping, I go to start the operation, but the game immediately skips to 2 days ahead...

12/17

The gang discuss their plans to rescue Fiona and decide the roles they'll play in the operation. As they go to leave, they have Towa commence the operation and it has Operator Vivi and Operator Mint come on screen to confirm her orders. It's so cute how the game is integrating the side cast into the plot lol, I love it. Sara meanwhile has an internal monologue about being worried about the possibility of jaegers showing up. I suspect she might have some history with some of these guys due to her past as a bracer. After that little bit, we see the ship set off.

It has me pick a team now so I go with Alisa, Laura, and Machias, along with the required Elliot/Sara. We get a shot of what's going on down below, we see Craig advancing on the Alliance with his tank brigade. The alliance commander stops him and says that if he advances any further, they'll kill his daughter. Craig snaps back and suggests that they not underestimate her. On one hand, pretty badass line. On the other hand, what an insane reaction lol. If this wasn't an anime where we were going to save the day and this was a real world situation, could you imagine someone acting like that? I sure hope not. LUCKILY FOR HIM, as he says this Towa comes barging in on the Courageous to interrupt their discussion, while Alfin uses a loudspeaker from the deck to verbally berate the alliance for using civilians as hostages.

The gang jumps down to the ground as we're thrust into a Valimar fight. This time it has Alisa as my copilot, but for the first time I notice that you can press R1 to switch them out. Has that always been a thing? I decide to just leave it on Alisa anyway since I like her and these fights are all braindead, I doubt there's really much of a difference. It'd be nice if they do add some stuff that requires you to actually switch between copilots later, but my hope is pretty muted on that front. The robot fight ends with a whimper and Rean and Alisa get some link XP to celebrate. Maybe I should switch off her in the future since she's already my highest level link with Rean, they're a bit into level 5 for me atm, which I think was the max in CS1.

The gang rushes inside the base, but the scene zooms out to show the hooded man who was watching in the same spot in Act 1, still watching. I thought he was the weird history teacher before, but I don't think he really sounded like him just now, so I'm not really sure. Also, I'd like to think that whoever this is has just been perched out here with a tent for the last 2 weeks waiting for whenever we'd come back. Clearly he has nothing better to do.

While going through the dungeon, I got to hear Machias and Sara's ending line for the first time which was pretty good.

Sara: Not bad, I can appreciate the shotgun approach.
Machias: Outside of class, I ask questions later.

Machias being badass and a geek at the same time is definitely a vibe. Eventually, the gang gets to the top of the base to rescue Fiona, who remarks that Elliot has grown so much. Elliot still looks like he's 10 so that's definitely a dig. Good job big sis, we can hate on him together! Eventually the commander summons some beasts from behind the wall in standard Trails fashion. I take back what I said earlier, this was actually the easiest boss fight of the game so far. I literally just activated demon form with Rean, used Sara's power up and unleashed some strong attacks with those two while Machias used his time skip to keep the action going. I think the demon dogs got in like 1 hit each lmao.

The standard post battle, you-haven't-REALLY-won cutscene commences as the allied commander summons some more monsters, but who else shows up to save the day other than Instructor Neithardt? He rushes on screen to kill the beasts, and the text box that has his entrance up and says, 'Instructor Neithardt', which I only think is funny because characters up to this point have always gotten introductions like, 'Blue Haired Girl', even when the name Millium had been said at least 50 times beforehand.

As if he can hear my thoughts, he immediately says that he's not our instructor anymore and his name changes to 'Major Neithardt' in the textbox. This game is so fucking sassy with text box names and I love it. Acting Captain Towa and Captain Claire know what's up.

Anyway they all reunite and safely rescue Fiona, and the game segues to a map showing how the outcome of this battle changed the war situation between the two sides. The Noble Alliance is routed out of Celdic and forced to retreat into Bareahard, and Celdic is under the control of the Imperial forces. After that brief bit of exposition they jump back to our cast, who are discussing the event that just transpired. They basically just talk about how Neithardt only showed up because he wants to fuck Fiona, and also that the hooded guy was the one who gave Neithardt the info. Neithardt also supports our plan to become de-facto bracers and wishes us well. That brings us to the end of the day as the calendar ticks forward.

Next time on Trails of Cold Steel...no idea honestly. Some other classmates side plot I suppose. Random guess will be freeing Machias' dad from prison. See you guys then!

I mean, they're under house arrest so not really. Not sure how much access to the cash Alfin and Olivier have exactly if they can't go through the Emperor. Alfin in particular is in high school not sure she can roll up to the local bank and withdraw from the imperial treasury. And while they can give IOUs... that's kinda contingent on them beating the Noble Alliance sooo.

Why in the world did they remove chest quotes from the rest of the game? They gave the game so much flavor. I have to wonder why this random chest has one but not any of the others though.
Chest quotes was purely an XSEED thing. In the original Japanese, the Sky chests all shared the same generic "this chest is empty" message, but XSEED noticed that despite the message being the same rather than all the chests pointing to the same message, each one pointed to a unique "this chest is empty" message so after running it by Falcom they thought it'd be fun to change all those messages to jokes. Later on Falcom wised up and rather than having hundreds of the same message in the code they had them all pointing to a single instance, so XSEED actually had to do work to get them added in.

Flash-forward to Cold Steel and regular chests, once opened, didn't work like that so they had to forgo chest messages. ...But the Trial Chests opened the door again which is why they're back for those, and only those by using the "you don't have the right party members" text boxes.

So when I started FC someone told me to make sure to check every box after opening it and I thought there was going to be like extra treasure in some boxes or something and never found anything that I remember, and I played in Japanese so I never knew about the chest messages. Even in CS2 I sometimes try to examine a chest after I open it out of habit, and from the looks of it there was no point in me doing it this whole time!

12/18

Hello dear reader, it's been awhile. For your sake, I'll do a brief recap: we recently rescued Fiona, Elliot's sister from the noble alliance, she was starstruck by Major Neithardt during the rescue and now wants to jump his bones. The imperial forces have reclaimed Celdic and we're back onboard the Courageous.

Today, it looks like a bonding day. I've got 12 points to use in Celdic, to my memory this is the first bonding day outside of Ymir, so let's get started! First off we've got main girl Alisa who's wanting to take a stroll down memory lane here in Celdic, this being the site of Class VII's first field study. Rean and her decide to take a ride out on the highway on Rean's motorcycle while chatting. Clearly they don't know how loud a motorcycle will get, but maybe in Erebonia they've mastered sound dampening technology before we have. Rean says he's got a sidecar she can ride in, but she says not to worry about it and she'd rather ride behind him. Aww, the teenage romance is so sweet. I wonder though if that exchange even occurs if you hadn't purchased the sidecar in George's store yet? I'll never know. There's not too much more to their scene though, they resolve to rescue Trista like they did Celdic, and that ends their event.

Next person I see is Alfin, who's out chillin with ol' Otto, the market manager. She gives me a medal of charity as an accessory, which gives 100 ats and 100 ep. That's a pretty damn broken accessory, I stick that on Alisa to go with her 1/3 casting time that Toval gave us. Between Alfin and Toval, Alisa is primed for total destruction. Those random camps will not know what hit them lol. She also wants to hang out at the market for her bonding event, so we go to do that and she talks about how nice it is to be out and about for a change. She gets to try some food from a market stall and shop around a bit, but eventually tragedy strikes as we overhear some merchants discussing the war. They say that the imperial family has been utterly useless in stopping it. How relevant! One of the merchants chimes in though and says that Princess Alfin is behind the freeing of Celdic, and that he's sure that the Imperial family is doing their best behind the scenes to help. How even more relevant! Alfin speaks to Rean and says that while she's not surprised people are upset, she is still happy that their efforts at the bridge to free Celdic paid off. That same nicer merchant then looks over and recognizes Alfin, but she plays it off by pretending to be Rean's sister. But then goes on to say that they're not related by blood, and they want to get married? I would be like what...the...fuck if I ever heard someone say that to me in real life lol. Trails wouldn't be trails without some casual incest baiting thrown in though, so what can you do...

That ends the scene with Alfin and I get some link XP with her, which is interesting. Maybe she'll be a real player character later? I don't remember them ever giving link XP to NPCs. I can't imagine the ship where they didn't even bother coding in an auto attack for her could count for that. Maybe it's just a hint for Cold Steel 3? I know the link XP carries over to some degree. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I run into Rosine at the church, but she's not ready to join us quite yet. She gives us some Teara Balms and says she'll try and join our flying schoolhouse/army soon. Millium's also in the church with a fresh new bonding event for us, she wants us to go and watch the Sunday School lesson together! Riveting. Rean remarks that this may not be a great idea, given Millium's disposition, but Millium hits back that she won't cause any trouble because she's the 'Queen of Quiet'. I think I know where this is going. I will admit that her antics are less grating and more humorous when I don't have to listen to any voice acting. Maybe if this game was fully unvoiced like Sky I would like her more. Naturally she ends up butting into their session after about 10 seconds and spends the rest of the time taking control and teaching the class, though they remark that she did a good job at it. After that ends, she remarks how she misses her life at Thors and wishes she could go back. Hopefully not kid, hopefully not.

Next person is Machias over at the weapons shop. I thought he didn't even get an event this time because there was no yellow ! above his head like the others. I guess it was just some sort of bug, since he ends up asking Rean to go hang out around town and just talk to people. Social butterfly Rean Schwarzer never turns down an opportunity like that. One of the kids they talk to calls Machias a 'specster', even though we can clearly see he is wearing his contacts right now. Plot holes upon plot holes...Not much else really happens though. I'm not the only one who thinks that Machias' events are all low quality, right? They really do just assume that nobody likes him. I like you, buddy. Keep your head up.

Laura's having some tea at the inn, so Rean goes over to join her. All these guys ever do is drink tea man. The owner of the inn walks up and asks what they want, but they're confused why the owner is doing this and not a waitress. They are stunned when they learn that she's all alone today, so naturally, Rean and Laura decide to help her out. Can you imagine if you're at a coffee shop and you see two people that are clearly customers just up and start working there on a whim? I'd have to guess there was some flash mob, youtube prank about to happen. But no, these kids are just something else. I think they really just wanted an excuse to have Laura wear an apron, since they have a 10 second close-up slow pan when she wears it. Gotta let us know~

Nothing else really happens with Laura, proving my point, but Sara is also at the bar drinking her sorrows away like usual. Laura with the tea, Sara with the beer, Machias with nothing, they really have gotten lazy this go around. Anyway, Rean and Sara get to talking and Rean seems genuinely concerned about her. Clearly he hasn't been informed that Sara is a cuddly, fun alcoholic, not one of the sad and creepy ones. The kind you see on TV. Sara does have another banger of a line for us: "One quick snooze to counter the booze is all I need." I do love her.

Calamity strikes when the bar runs out of alcohol, and Sara starts to have a breakdown. Not to worry, the bartender says, we can buy some kegs down at the market. Hallelujah! We set off and Rean complains about how heavy the kegs are, while Sara talks about how her alcoholism started while she was training under some dude who was always at the bar. That's all the backstory we can get from her for now unfortunately, and the scene ends.

On the second story of the bar I find Fie who's fast asleep in the hallway. Is that some Jaeger training to just fall asleep in the hallway of an inn instead of getting a room? Bad manners at the very least. Rean's worried she's gonna catch a cold so he goes to buy her a room. She's still indoors bro, how tf is she gonna catch a cold in a hallway but not in a bedroom? Whatever. As Rean carries her to bed, she half-wakes up and asks if Rean is her old Zephyr leader. Rean says no and that they will never be able to replace him and what he was to her. She falls back asleep immediately after and Rean is glad that she will forget all of this happened by the time she wakes up. I actually really liked this scene, it's such a stark contrast to a Machias scene or a Sara alcoholism bit. I do really like Fie, but man I just can't bring myself to use her in battles, she just feels so weak. I hope they buff her in the next game but I have a feeling it will be much like this and the characters won't change at all.

After that ends, I walk over to the other side of town and check out Becky's house. She's in there, with a green checkmark above her head, which I assume means that we're going to recruit her? It appears that's correct, and she doesn't even make us do a lazy fetch quest, she just accepts and comes aboard right away. When the text box pops up notifying you of this it says, "Becky was welcomed aboard the Courageous! Yasss!" I love how this game uses it's text boxes lmao.

Next we find Emma outside who wants to go to Lumaria park to check out why exactly the higher elements were present there. She goes over to confirm and tries to dispel them, but doesn't have any luck. She then talks about how she wishes she were a better witch, and how Vita wouldn't have had any trouble clearing out the higher elements if she wanted to. She says that she feels lacking compared to Vita. There's one area you're certainly not lacking in, heh heh. Man ok real talk for a second idk why they wanted to turn Emma into the hot one in this version. She was so plain in 1, it seems kind of random. I guess the more waifus the better if they want to make the big bucks. Anyway, Rean cheers her up and tells her that she should take it all one step at a time, and the growth will come. He also takes her for a walk around the park to help her relax. They'd definitely end up making out alone in the park after an emotional conversation if this were real life, but this game is for good boys and girls so we just get an undramatic ending.

I run into Jusis returning to town, he's down in the dumps. Rean decides to take him to the market to try and cheer him up, and it seems to work. Jusis talks about how he's never been here before, which surprises Rean. Jusis explains that it's because he was never able to leave Bareahard. Makes sense, a noble locked in the castle is a tale as old as time. Becky's dad offers Jusis an apple, but apparently Jusis doesn't know how to eat it. Lol just eat it you dumbass it's not hard. How the hell has he never had an apple before, they're laying on the noble thing a bit thick here. Becky's dad can tell that Jusis is feeling down and offers him some advice - he shouldn't feel bad about everything going on because it's not his fault, and nobody in town will resent Jusis for the actions of his father. I feel like in the real world that the common citizens would not be so understanding for Jusis, but luckily we're in a fantasy world and everyone is friendly and level headed so Jusis doesn't have to deal with too much bullshit. That is able to cheer Jusis up though, and his scene ends.

Next I head to the market and Gaius is outside, staring out into the distance. We talk to him and he tells us that he's looking at the windmill. Okay, they really had no idea what to do with Gaius' characterization did they? Hey this guy talks about wind all the time, he probably likes windmills, fuck it. Lmao, great stuff Falcom. They could legitimately remove Gaius from the game and it would not affect the plot in the slightest. Poor guy. Anyway they go to check out the windmill and it mysteriously stops as they approach it. They let the farmer who owns it know, and they have a scene where they work together to fix the windmill. End scene.

Okay, I really hope one day that they try and pull a real subversive move and just have the gang call Gaius out on his shit. Why are you always talking about the wind, bro? You're so damn boring. I want to hear Rean say that. Or anyone. Maybe Jusis could get away with it. Nobody ever says a single mean thing a bout him and I just think it would be hilarious.

Walking around the market I find Elliot who wants to go listen to that travelling musician you run into every now and then. My boy Andre finally getting some time in the spotlight, aww yeah. Fun fact, in French class in high school I picked Andre as my designated French name. Anyway, Andre plays his tunes and Elliot talks about how awesome music is. That's all that really happens. This is a perfect scenario where Machias syndrome is used to great effect. However, I'm still sad that Machias is on the receiving end of Elliot syndrome.

Last person I run into is Towa. Sadly it was her and not Elliot, so I couldn't use my last but least joke again. At this point I have to assume that the developers always put Elliot in some far away place you'll go to at the end because they know nobody wants to talk to him anyway. Now THAT'S good game design!

Towa wants to go out tot he highway for something, so Rean joins her, ostensibly to keep her safe from monsters but really because he is a fiend for female companionship. When we get out there, she reveals that she wanted to go somewhere secluded for some target practice, and pulls out a big ass handgun. And I mean a big ass handgun, this thing is twice as big as her head lmao. I'm gonna guess there's no caliber this big IRL but I'm not really a gun guy so who knows. Also, I was thinking that she must have to join our party at some point if she's going to get a bonding scene here, so good opportunity for them to introduce her weapon of choice to us. She was in a military training school after all. Anyway, she explains the size away saying that it fires ~magic orbal~ bullets, not real ones, and it requires this engineering to function. Sure, Towa, sure. That's why, and not because the developers thought it'd be funny to see the shy girl with a foot long gun. They talk about how she's ready to stand up for herself since she's directly involved in the war now and putting herself into danger constantly. During her practice, the orbal bullet shots do look pretty cool so whenever she does join our team I might try her out. Hopefully she doesn't suck like Fie.

I walk around town for a bit after and talk to everyone but I can't find any hidden side quests or anything so I got to leave town and end the day. When you do that, Rean is stopped by the mysterious hooded stranger! He acts all dramatic and reveals himself to us, and he is....the weird history teacher that I thought it was way back when. Why did they change his voice before then? He sounds back to normal as soon as they take the hood off lol. So lame. Anyway he joins us on board the ship and the day ends.

Next time, on Cold Steel...Thomas backstory? Ugh who cares. Hopefully we get back to the war. See you guys soon!

Yeah. CS1 had Class VII, Sara, and Towa. Sara was playable at Garrelia only but Towa just wasn't at all of course.

Probably not the only (think Sara can for example), but she certainly can and since she can counter at range she's one of the more ideal options for it.

12/19

Thomas says that he was working on behalf of the principal to help students around the country, which is why he had to work in secrecy. I don't quite buy that logic, I don't see why the Noble Alliance would care unless it was specifically Class VII, even then, how would they ever know? I think he just got off on it. Also he says was doing this work on behalf of the principal, but really I think he's just a kiddy diddler. Creepy ass mfer. I don't like him.

We check our quests, we have one required quest to kill an Abyss Worm. Ah man, I fucking hated these things in Sky, I think I may have had to redo the Abyss Worm fight upwards of 100 times. I don't think I'm exaggerating either. I remember redoing that fight for hours. That experience was an integral one in me swearing off nightmare mode until Cold Steel. Though I do wish I had tried it in Zero and Azure now, because those games were amazing. If I ever replay them I will, but I am not one for replaying RPGs by and large, so it will probably just be a pipe dream...Anyway, Neithardt also needs us to do some Valimar training with him, and then we've got an optional quest to investigate some "strangeness" going on in the bathhouse in Ymir. I think I already know where that one's going. Let's get started!

The game randomly requires Millium to be in your party...oh boy. The only explanation given is, "Can I come Rean? Can I?" Like are you serious lmao at least try and write in a better reason man. Well, I guess now I'll have to upgrade Millium's gear now, which sucks. But I didn't actually ever use Elliot a single time when I was required to bring him, so maybe I can get away with not doing so...this game's pretty easy after all. But on the off chance they throw some curve balls at us today I want to be prepared so I'll shell out some cash for her. Plus I do remember someone once saying in here that Millium's actually very good in battle, so maybe I'll get a chance to test that? On the bright side, hilariously, my dream of Elliot-Gaius-Millium being the required teammates all in a row actually came true lmao. What are the odds? The developers probably know who the least popular characters are so maybe it's not random chance. Gotta eat your broccoli, kids. Regardless they've done me a great service so thank you, Falcom, it's all smooth sailing from here.

Accompanying us today will be Alisa and Laura, my main two, as well as Jusis and Sara. I'm a little worried not bringing Machias with me since he has a lot of utility but he's my least favorite of my main crew so he'll stay behind. Well, technically I'd say Laura is my least favorite character wise but she's way too broken to leave behind. Her and Alisa are my backbone, Machias/Jusis/Sara are my preferred filler. Elliot, Fie, Gaius, and Emma just suck. Well, Emma doesn't suck but she fills the same role as Alisa and I don't think you can get away with using both. Her magic reflect ability is probably more useful than anything Alisa has, but you can get it as an orbment anyway and Alisa's the main girl so I always use them on my team in any RPG. Fie doesn't suck personality wise, but she is just useless in battle (Sorry). Like Gaius, there's just nothing she's good at that I care to add to the team. On the bright side, them removing Claire and Sharon from my team means it's a lot easier for me to decide who's coming with me, so thanks I guess.

Anyway, all that aside I went to explore the ship and see what's new around here today. Went and upgraded everyone's orbments that I use to be all shiny and new, played blade with some people, talked to Thomas. Apparently his role on the ship will be to decipher those Black Records I've found, but he doesn't do a very good job and they're still largely unreadable. There's some gods and some drama, I don't know. I'll wait until they're fully deciphered to care. He does mention that he will be able to do so whenever he gets more advanced equipment, so I'm sure that's not too far off.

Becky has a trade shop set up with a bunch of goodies. I'm able to get Alisa, Towa, and Fie skins for the motorcycle, as well as FINALLY getting some contacts for Emma. I have no more use for you, travelling merchant, begone. There's some equipment you can get if you have sets done, and I'm able to get the animal watch set, the tyrant badge set and the fighter badge set completed. Also while I'm here I get Jusis a ride-along bunny attachment. He needs a friend.

As I get ready to leave I check the student section that I realized existed too late last time, and there appear to be a few here to recruit today. I'll probably do all the optional quests first, then cycle back around for the kids since I might find some of them when I'm out in the world anyway. Now it's time to get started - my first quest has me going to Ymir, where I'm able to knock out the snowboarding mini game. For the first time it actually made me have to retry so that was fun. Nothing else here besides the quest so I head over to the hot springs, they want me to do a stakeout because there's some peeping toms that we need to scope out. Wasn't this already a quest in Crossbell? Why Falcom gotta be so lazy man. Whatever, let's get it over with. The boys have a normal scene with realistic dialogue, and so do the gir- lol jk it's a Trails game, they talk about how big each others tits are and start groping each other. Normal stuff. After that bit you get to snowboard down a mountain and chase after some monsters who were the peeping toms. At least they're innovating on Crossbell's version of this quest because I don't remember any snowboard minigame chase sequences there. It was pretty cool so I respect the hustle. When you catch them and have a fight it's actually pretty tough too, the main penguin boss guy can freeze you and faint you constantly, so you're limited in terms of how much you actually get to play the game. I did manage to beat it first try, but I had to use all my mana AND a revive item so that was a harder fight than most of the bosses this game has had recently.

That was the only optional quest, so my earlier plan to find some students along the way didn't work out. Time to hunt them down! One of them, Paula, is on the highway and needs us to find her missing horse; after a bit of a chase sequence we get it and now we have the ability to ride horses in the overworld. Not sure why I'd want to do that when I've got the bike (and turbo mode) but cool, thanks Paula. Two more students, Kenny and Loggins are close by to her and they want me to investigate the Trista countryside to see if there's any way to infiltrate it. No luck finding any openings in the alliance's defense, but they join me anyway, what bros. Next is some chick who's on the 'North Kreuzen Highway' which is an area that you haven't visited before, and took me over 10 minutes to actually figure out how to get to because the map is vague and unhelpful. While going through this area my Jusis leveled up and learned some craft that gives an AOE Adamantine Shield effect around him which is pretty broken. I think they really want you to use him, lol. Like I was talking about earlier, compare everything Jusis was given to what Fie can do with her crafts. It's just night and day. The balance in this game could use a little work, but it's okay.

I found another trial chest here and am able to confirm that it only shows the chest quote when you don't have the right teammates, because I had them and it didn't appear. I wonder if they still coded in messages for the first few trial chests before you had everyone when you always had the right teammates for it? Data miners, find out! I hope not because missing out on them would make me sad. Our quote today is, "Millium has been doing her best to get Jusis and Machias to come play with her, but sadly, her efforts thus far have been Juseless." 3/10

After that I finish the student sidequest up and get Dorothee and some other dude, as well as Munk who's chilling in the Garellia Fortress camp. He needs us to find some sticker which is SOMEWHERE in the twin dragons bridge area. I explore everywhere but don't find it, though I am finally able to nab that treasure chest they tease you with when you go through here at the beginning of the game. Out in the byroad behind the fort, there's another trial chest - "It's silly that Laura is worried about her weight, right? After all it doesn't look like she's put on even Le-gram." 2/10 they're getting worse oh god

I go back and it turns out that General Craig has the sticker for some reason, so that's another kid down. I go back to the ship so I can see what all they're doing for me now, Alan is our new helmsman which seems like a pretty important job for that whatever guy, but what can you do. Loggins is doing the melee training so I knock one out real quick, and Munk is offering contests where you can spend 100 for a shitty prize, or 1000 for a chance at a better prize. I'm always picking the 1000 I aint no bitch. You can apparently come back and do his contest every 5 battles, but I'm too lazy for that so it'll be a once in a blue moon type thing. Dorothee sells a bunch of useless books I already have, I'm surprised they even gave her something I figured she'd just walk around uselessly. And finally, Fidelio says he has a photo developing service which piques my interest, but all he actually does is sell some garbage healing items. I'm slightly upset that there's no photo developing minigame, damn you Falcom for baiting me.

After that I'm about to start the main quests, but my guide I'm loosely following tells me there's an optional cryptid boss you can fight in Lunaria Nature Park so I go out of my way to try that out. Apparently that boss I beat a few weeks ago that I spent hours trying to figure out how to beat was part of this same quest line and they're not really meant to be tackled this early, so I'm pretty proud I figured that one out right when it became available. It was the only real challenge this game has had so far so I appreciate them for making it available early. Anyway, my first try on this guy goes terribly. He just puts everyone to sleep constantly so I just reload and give everyone some anti-sleep equipment and try it again, and the fight is pretty braindead. I can't imagine anyone would have trouble with this unless they absolutely refuse to buy anti-sleep equipment so Falcom is disappointing me again. It did drain me of all my EP and wipe a few individual guys, but there was never any real danger, it's just a slog. For this one you're rewarded with the Divine Salvation gem, which gives an attack art called Lost Eden. It lowers everyone's Strength and ATS by 50% and has a 200% chance to confuse people. Sounds fun lol, I'll try it on a boss for fun sometime I'm sure. Jusis can hold onto that one for me.

Next thing I do is Neithardt's quest, he wants me to fight his Weltall-looking gear with my Valimar. Like every other gear fight it's just rinse and repeat the same 3 things, nothing to see here. After that I do the other story quest which is *sigh* the Abyss Worms. Here we go again, but this game's pretty easy so I'm sure it can't be too bad. For the hell of it I try and fight it "honorably" the first time and get destroyed, just like the good old days. After that it's cheese city so I just spam some 200cp S crafts and win the fight instantly. Why did they have to make these so OP? Falcom just balance your shit god damn.

After that fight Towa calls you back to the ship, so away I go. When you get there you're immediately greeted with a cutscene, it looks like someone unexpected wants to speak with us. Which ensemble cast member will it be this time?! My bets are on the principal. The screen dramatically turns on and we get............Angelica! OK I probably should've seen that one coming actually lol. She lets us know that she's near Roer and trying to free Alisa's mother from somewhere nearby, because she's been imprisoned. As she says that gunfire erupts in the background and she drops the call. After that happens the gang of course agrees to rush to her rescue, and as the gang goes to discuss the issue, they determine that they need to get help from someone else...and the day skips ahead.

Next time on Cold Steel, Angelica rescue mission! I like the subplot with Alisa's Mom and hopefully Sharon will make a reappearance so it should be a fun one. Seems like the game is starting to heat up just a little bit. See you guys soon!

_stingers_ posted...

I never bought equipment for the forced characters, just threw them on the end of the bench lmao

Elliot, Fie, Gaius, and Emma just suck.

Emma is absolutely carrying my team lmao

dont read stingers

I thought I might beat the game today but this red gundam is trucking me up. I didn't realize it was going to force me to use all my weak characters at the same time. Thankfully I can go back and edit their equipment and orbments, but that doesn't help the fact that they're 20 levels lower than my main party...and I can't buy new stuff or make new quartz. I did have the foresight to buy everyone's weapons at least.

MZero: Ah, yeah. When I told you earlier you could ignore the game teling you to equip everyone at the end of Chapter 2 but that eventually you'd need to it was that fight I had in mind. I thought it gave you another "plz equip everyone before proceeding" warning before it but if it didn't and/or I led you to going into that unprepared, sorry. I thought the orbment charging stations had a shop with equipment though, at least the one at the ground floor if not the final one. (That was the other reason I said you should ignore the Thors warning, the Castle shop is like two equipment tiers better or something so you'd have to probably replace anything you bought in Chapter 2 anyway)
